Are those cracks on the surface of each button or are they occurring from the backside of each? Either way, it's not good. Hopefully it's not a huge deal to have them replaced at some point.

I have this on my two and three buttons. The dealer said they won't replace it because it was caused by external forces. I think they're fucking assholes though :-)

The cracks are on the surface of each button

I still say that's a crappy two-shot injection mold. What happened is simply the black plastic didn't fully fill the entire mold as it should have. It happens sometimes. It's a bad part. Maybe their pressure was off when running that batch.

IMO what some are calling a crack is actually two injected plastic flows that never met up and joined together fully. You wouldn't notice anything unusual at first but eventually as you wear away some top layer of the black plastic, you're noticing that the black plastic isn't as solid as it should have been. Where ever you don't have the black plastic, you have the clear plastic, so hence the light is shining through.

Well, dealers will fix cosmetic things during the initial 36 months without too much push back.

In the meantime, to spread the wear, by putting the most used functions on different buttons. This might help a little until it is fixed.

After you go #2 do you wash your hands? If not, the acids from your feces-infected manos could void the warranty and bmw may not replace the buttons.

If that happens to mine they'll be replacing them. Luckily in NZ BMW dealers don't tend to argue the point -- one advantage of the high prices we pay here.

It's faulty injection mouldings, cheap plastic plus the buttons are too stiff to push which causes stress and strain.

I'll see how mine hold out once I've loaded them. In the meantime, cut your nails, wash your hands after your toilet festivities, wear cotton gloves like Japenese taxi drivers, only use the iDrive if concerned, be a bit more delicate but push gently but firmly and hope for the best or worst!

Went out to stare at the buttons...without taking one off and cutting it in half I can't tell if it's a 2 shot molded keycap or a clear part that's been painted and laser etched (which is the most common process now for backlit keyboards on laptops since it requires no special tooling)

I didn't feel like breaking my car so I didn't pry one off to be sure...but it's hard to tell if it was just a flaw in the molding like Joey suggests or something causing the paint layer to seperate like chemicals or heat.

Maybe its just the touchkeys which are faulty. Because I use the sports /comfort/ eco pro mode button and the start button more frequently with no signs of deterioration. So it can't be the way I am using the buttons or anything peculiar to my skin or natural oils. Unless these buttons are made in a different manufacturing process.

Did anyone who had this problem successfully get them replaced under warranty?

Hi, new to the forums here just got used 2012 F30 328i about a mouth ago and just notice this issue myself. Out of the 8 pre-set buttons 6 of mine are affected, going to the dealer this weekend since they want to look at it before giving me an answer about fixing the issue. Will update once I talk to them.

Sorry about the delay on this update I had a death in the family.

So took the car in twice for this issue, 1st time SA stated that the service manager had to ok the fix due to cost ( after waiting two hrs in the lobby I was told to come back tmw ). Being upset about wasting a day at the dealer I called BMW NA and voiced my frustration. BMW NA stated they would contact the dealer about having the issue address.

Came back to have Service manager look at the issue and he spent a min. looking at it before giving the ok to have it fix.
