Golf Tee Mod
Just an E92 owner here wondering if the F30s (both 328i and 335i) have the capacity for the golf tee mod or something similar. Is the vacuum-powered "flap" still in its left tailpipe location on the 335i?

In response to this being moved to N55 Turbo Engine / Drivetrain / Exhaust Modifications forum, can someone confirm that the golf tee mod, as it relates to F30, is the same as for E9x? I was under the impression that this was specific to the model, not the engine. I didn't know that all N55s would all have the same stock exhaust configuration and thus be modded the same way. What about N20? Is F30 = E90 for purposes of golf tee?

I deactivated the exhaust valve on my F30 328i. It is electrically operated instead of vacuum powered so the golf tee method will not work. However, it is just as easy. There is a spring clip that connects the actuator to the stem on the butterfly valve. Just remove the clip. Then use a piece of wire or some epoxy to fix the butterfly value in the open position. It makes a little difference but not as much as I hoped - almost barely noticable sound increase. So I did some exhaust system modification to make it louder and now it sounds very good. Good tone and volume and no resonance.

I had the M-Performance exhaust put on mine soon as it came off the boat. Nice sound. But the golf-tee (OK, removal of spring clip and wired open exhast butterfly) makes for a sweet growl at all RPMs.

Okay fellas. I finally had a day off to mess with the car a bit. Although the Golf Tee Mod is not the same as what I did, the outcome can be the same. I didn't take any pictures. Sorry. But it's quite easy to understand once you get under the car.
Although disconnecting the electrical harness can leave an error embedded in the computer, it will not give you an error in iDrive. There are several ways you can do this mod. One is completely error free (at least in theory). There are 4 important components to this mod. 1. Electrical wire harness 2. Actuator that turns exhaust flap hinge 3. Clip that connects the actuator to the exhaust flap hinge 4. Exhaust flap hinge ERROR FREE METHOD (easiest) - Remove the Clip that connects the actuator and flap with some needle nose pliers. - Secure the flap with a wire of some sort in the open position. - This method will keep the actuator plugged in and working. But it will not be mechanically opening the flap. But the computer shouldn't know the difference. UNPLUG ACTUATOR - Unplug electrical wire harness from the actuator. - Secure wire harness out of the way so that it is not dangling. - Unclip Actuator with pliers. - Remove actuator all together. All you need is a 10mm socket wrench. 3 bolts. RESULTS*** In my opinion, it made very little difference in sound. But then again, I just drove it up and down a quiet street. And then had my friend do the same as I watched. I did notice a loud turbo whistling sound that I never noticed before. |

Sorry for the bump... but I just wanted to bring this up. When I was picking up my car yesterday, my CA called this mod out specifically. He said that it may sound like an awesome thing to do, but you lose a little back pressure and over time it can cause some issues that can be traced back to the mod.
I'm not going to attempt to suggest his comment is completely truthful, accurate or valid - but wanted to bring it up so that others can rethink the mod. |

I could see how you would loose a little back pressure...most exhaust mods will do this. You will see a gain more in the high end do an increase exhaust flow but may loose a tiny low end due to again more free flowing exhaust. I don't see how this could cause any issues?

Honestly, on cold start my car is quite loud with just the right-side pipe open. When the actuator opens the left-side flap (and the actuator is surprisingly loud), then the whole tone actually quiets down as the car finishes warming up. And furthermore, once the car is warmed up, I've yet to see the left-side pipe close up again... it seems to stay open all the time for me.

That's the exact opposite of how mine behaves. Left pipe is closed on cold start... actuator opens the left pipe after ~1 min of idling and then it stays open until I shut the car off.

I even posted a video on here of it...left side closed, right side spewing exhaust on startup. Once it's warmed up, both are open and GTG.

anyone else think the PPK would make the performance exhaust sound much better?
