busted tail light.
hey guys, I just got my car back from BMW service. they did the scheduled maintenance on my car oil, ect.. Now I picked up the car last week, no issues, my wife drives it. so today I took it out with her to the mall and returning to my car I notice the driver side rear light is sticking out.. the reverse light housing, not the car housing, upon getting it back to my shop, I pull it out and notice that the clip that holds down the light is busted, and no reminance of the broken tab are in the trunk lid, which is strange as its covered with the bmw beauty cover.. hummmmm so iam thinking the dealership broke one off another car putting it back in, quickly took mine off and replaced the broken one with my good one, and stuck me with the broken one. I removed the pass side one and the coding is all different. Can someone with a hell of a lot better understanding of BMW codes tell me if the taillights have been switched??

Bmw has a service bulletin in regards to tail lights just falling out of the car. Im sure your service asvisor knows about it. I has the same thing hallen to my car last uear and they fixed it without issue. This was a known issue for a few of us f30 owners. Crazy right?? Youd think the over engineering germans would know how to stick on some tail lights without them falling out.

Old thread I know....
Just noticed my passenger tail light also has a broken tab so I cannot just push it back in place. I bought my car used 2 months ago and it has 53k on it so I'm out of warranty. Will BMW fix it for free due to the Service Bulliten? My dealership is closed for the weekend, I'm going to call Monday... IF not I'm planning on ordering the part and installing it myself, I've seen it for about $90 unless anybody knows of a better deal. Thanks |

A service bulletin is only to help dealerships identify and fix known issues quickly. If you call and describe your issue, they can check for TSBs and quickly provide a quote and have a replacement part ordered when you bring it in. It doesn't indicate an extended warranty.

BMW would not fix mine under warranty in early 2016. I ordered a used one and replaced it myself. I ended up slightly bending the metal lip which grabs the tab on the housing to provide better engagement. Hopefully this keeps it from happening again (it has for 40k miles now...)
