Buyers remorse, regretting passing over the S4 in favor of 335
I bought a certified 2015 335i xdrive this week after driving a ton of vehicles over the past few months. I almost bought a certified 2015 S4 but the price was just a little too high. The dealer dropped the price on the 335 so I jumped on it, mostly so I could stop looking at cars. But I am having some remorse on skipping the S4. In my opinion, it sounded better, had tighter handling, and was quicker than the 335. The downshifts in dynamic mode kept it revving high and sounding like an indy car and would take off with just a blip of the throttle. The 335 is much tamer sounding and seems to have some delay when I stomp on the gas. I dont know if this is turbo lag or traction control or transmission or something else. Ultimately, I bought the BMW because it was cheaper and looked better. But i think i'm missing the performance of the S4.
Any opinions on 2015 335i xdrive vs 2015 S4? |

Add on the power kit and M Exhaust.
Wakes the car up, and I wouldn't have purchased my old 335 without it. It will also make the 335 quicker than the S4.

Felt the same way when I picked up my 335. I had the MPPK and MPE installed and it totally woke the car up. car sounds amazing now. Picking up a Dinan Sport this week as well, should be fun.

I read somewhere that you aren't shopping for a deal, you're shopping for a car. I try to avoid choosing one car over another because of a better deal. Buick are a much better deal, but I don't really want to drive a Buick.
That being said, I'm a former S4 owner here, and I think this might be the case of the grass being greener. 0-60 is almost identical, power is identical, the S4 has 25lb-ft more torque according to google. That might be what you are feeling... that extra bit of torque for extra push. Get a tune, some proper rubber and suspension and the 335i will feel like a sporty sedan rather than a grocery getter. The x-drive in particular is uninspiring stock simply because of the factory suspension setup.

I looked at the S4 prior to buying my 335 and a good buddy has one that I have driven a few times. My 335 has the MPPK and MPE but it is RWD. When I looked at those two cars new the S4 was several thousand $$$ more then my car even with MPPK and MPE but it had AWD. I find my car feels lighter on its feet and is quicker then his car but not by a lot. The S4 feel very solid and planted on the road and handles very nicely however when pushed hard it gets a bit out of its comfort zone I find. Now realistically I am talking about pushing it harder then you would normally be able to on the street. The S4 is an excellent car on the road. Nice looking car outside and the interior is a step above my car. I have driven his car and he has driven mine and we both like each others cars and find them to be very similar.
He really is happy with his car and his only real issue has been a few mechanical problems and has not had good luck with the dealer. he had a headlight fail, once it went into limp mode and made it to a dealer (minor sensor failed) and once was a major transmission problem and needed to be towed. The transmission problem the dealer tried to not cover part of it claiming he may have been abusing the car. This is funny as he occasionally drives fairly conservatively plus he keeps his car in great shape. The headlight was a major pain to fix. The car was really new...like 3-4 month old and the self leveling system plus the bulb stopped working. They tried to claim it wasn't covered? I could see a bulb maybe but the self leveling was huge $$$ and that should not happed to a new car. |

I cross shopped the S4 supercharge version vs the 340.
The 340 felt faster and I thought handled better. The Audi cost a lot more and I'm pretty satisfied with my decision. Ditto with the 335 RWD. If it was all wheel drive maybe I would go with the Audi since they seem to be better at that type of stuff. |

Modify your car to your liking - power, handling, appearance. Make it your own. Quit lingering on your decision. It accomplishes nothing.

Sounds like a tune, MPE and putting in sport mode will fix all of your gripes.

Comparing the S4 and 335 is not really fair the way you are doing it. The 335 is not trying to be the performance getter that the S4 is out the factory. The 335 is meant to be a reliable daily commuter car that has the ability to perform with added extras. Put some money into modifications and the car will come to perform equal if not better than the S4.

I was in the same boat OP. Coming from 2 prior Audis the S4 was #1 on my list. I had a C7 A6 prestige that I traded for this 335i. Both cars are great but the aftermarket support for the bmw is far better imo, read (cheaper), because there are a lot more options.
I will admit the 335i seems very lackluster without a tune but it still has some umph. Xdrive suspension definitely needs to go. It's soft as shit. Every bump makes my soul tremble. The 335i is indeed cheaper as a lot more are manufactured and shares plenty of parts across the 3series. The S4 doesn't benefit from this as much as Audi likes to separate the models a lot more imo. Mod it. You will be happy.

If you put a tune on, the 0-60 shrinks alot. Even without a tune, I believe the BMW engines are underrated and Audi engines are a little overrated.

Put MPPK + MPE / Awe Exhaust Suite. It is totally transform the car - throttle response / power / transmission shift speed / sound all goes into next level. For me is the right call to see next gen G20 as M40i trim so all these pieces already baked into the car like S4 / C43 AMG.

If you want awd get the Audi. If you want rwd go BMW. Simple as that. Also I would trust the n55 drivetrain over the S4 which is relatively newer. BMW has had a long time to work the kinks out the drivetrain

Not a fair comparison. If you're going to compare Audi's S models, then do it with BMW's M models.
If I were you, I'd go for a tune. Night and day upgrade to your car and would still fall cheaper with that tune than buying an S4 of the same year. |
