N20 Throttle Body Spacer
Anyone want to shed any light on this? I have one for my 428i but after doing various reading and what not I am now wondering is it really worth fitting it?
Anyone fitted one and notice any difference? Or does anyone have more knowledge than me and fancy advising with regards to the N20? I have installed them onto older cars running carbs in the past and have noticed a small difference but I am thinking that that is about where the usefulness of them ends - on carb'd engines...!? |

I can't imagine it making a noticeable difference, but you never know. Even if there is a gain in power it's probably not worth the install, and the slim chance of it making something go wrong. I'm just sticking to the major mods with my F30, I've had too many bad experiences with mods claiming small increases in power on previous cars.

From what I've heard it causes more turbulence in the air which helps mixing and better combustion... I have my reservations since the air at that velocity is probably completely turbulent already. |

Spacers do nothing on modern EFI motors. With a carb they could increase the plenum volume to adjust the power curve, but that won't work with DI. For DI motors, especially forced induction, they're completely and utterly worthless. They also make tuning a bitch.

Any time I buy a mod, I try to think "why wouldn't the manufacturer do this stock?". I understand intakes and exhausts because they make noise and the average person doesn't want that. But in this case, if it made more power, then BMW would have done it from the factory.

In addition, with the exception of the initial 0-2700 RPM, they are not pulling the full gain over the entire length of the curve. Meaning that in sum it is less than the 2% claimed no matter how you slice it. Although that first 2700 rpm is very interesting... I still want to see more dyno pulls and some stats on how they generated those figures. Last point, they are claiming 4hp, or roughly 2%. It is not even worth the effort for 2%. I don't think anyone could make the mm's difference matter on a track for 2% on a street level car. Better tires or weight cutting would make more of difference. I guess what I am saying is I just would not spend money on this, I could not justify it. I am sure some horsepower stickers would be a better use of cash. No offense to aFe, I have their intake and love it (but I make no pretense, I installed it for the noise, just like the M performance exhaust). |

Yeah precisely what I was thinking.
I only got it as part of a performance package from aFe but its not worth it. If anyone fancies a play with it I'll sell it but only ship within UK. |
