BMW among top 5 in reliability

http://www.automobilemag.com/news/to...bility-survey/

Pretty impressive considering what's ranked lower this year. The F30 is teaching the end of its life cycle and is a more popular model which may explain improvement in overall reliability. This generation also seems to have fewer problems as it ages than the E90 which that model still has plenty of examples still on the road with 200k plus miles.

You do know that you are linking an article from October 19, 2017? Granted, it shouldn't have changed much.

Although, sadly, BMW has 4 (including the 3-, 4-, and 5-Series) of the top 11 cars that are sold within one year of being purchased new.

I've driven BMW's for 18 years.
It's never been because I think they're tops in quality and reliability.
Never.

I've noticed no difference in reliability compared to Honda's and Toyota's I've owned.

My last BMW had the rear sub-frame class-action lawsuit issue. Every sensor on the car was suspect and most of them had to be changed (intake cam, exhaust cam, oil level... etc.). VANOS seals where generally regarded as needing replacement.

I never had things like that go wrong with my Honda. It had twice as many miles on it as my BMW.

But, each of us are just a sample of one.

My E36 had a cooling system failure and subsequent warped head.

My E38 had a chain guide failure.

They both had over 150k and were otherwise as reliable as most other 15 year old cars would be.

Hopefully my luck has turned *knocks on wood*

BMWs are definitely more reliable, but also less dynamic. I doubt most people lease BMWs for the reliability, though.

That's incredible! 8% trade their 3-series in the first year!!! I wonder what they get in its' place? I wonder what BMWNA thinks of this stat?

It has nothing to do with actual people getting rid of BMWs but more so the sheer amount of executive demos they have. I recall reading a massive thread on this before.

Yup--I that article a few months ago. Filled with BMW and MB cars that populate loaner fleets. Garbage in, garbage out data without actual analysis.

Likewise. There's currently a reliability competition going on between my wife's Toyota Highlander and my 328i. Both 2012. And both have been solid as a rock thus far.

I have had plenty of used cheap Japanese cars in the past that had plenty of problems. Only difference, and this is a big one, is that labor and parts are dirt cheap compared to a used BMW. You can take your used Corolla that wont pass smog or whatever to virtually any shop in existence and get it taken care of. BMWs, not the case. More specialized, more expensive labor and more expensive, harder to source parts. Also more complex electronics, suspension, transmission and engineering overall.

You can get cheap parts on FCP Euro and DIY. For indie shops you can avoid BMW tax if you shop around.

Well considering Dodge is listed as being in the bottom 5 for reliability and I've been happy with all 3 of my Dodge vehicles over the last 20 years, I don't imagine I'll be disappointed in the reliability of a BMW.

I mean the only bmw i can comment on was my sisters E90 that was city driven 90% of its life in philadelphia pot hole city. It also was taken care of bmw a girl so you know minimal washing and interior conditioning driven harshly etc. only major things gone wrong not related to typical maint was headlight electrical issues where the halo ring was not lit and could not be repaired fully by first an indie shop and bmw themselves which busted out a few weeks later.

I have my f30 now with 25k miles with no major issues knock on wood. I do agree with jdpower ratings of average interior quality due to all the damn creeking noises.

FCP Euro is not only competitive, they'll replace your burnt out sparkplugs and brake pads gratis, their lifetime warranty is insane. It should be too good to be true, but it is not.

I guess once you've been involved in a significant accident in a BMW that you'll know where the true strengths lie.

The reliability of my F32 has been terrible. In terms of reliability, the worst car I have owned...
