Oil temp, where is yours?
335i owners, after the engine is fully warmed and you've driven about 15 minutes, what temp does your oil temp show?
328i owners, what about your oil temp under same conditions? |

My 328i stabilizes at about 215 under normal conditions.
On a really hot day and going up a hill it might get to 230. It's never even gotten close to hitting 250 even when it's 100+ degrees outside. When the load comes off, the temp drops pretty quickly. I think this car has a really big/efficient oil cooler. I couldn't believe it took 6+ quarts of oil at the oil change for a 2.0 liter 4 banger! Also, it seems to take a long time (about 15 miles) to get up to a stable temp. The needle doesn't even move off of 160 until at least 8-10 miles out. At first I though the oil temp gauge was broken! Is it normal for the car to take so long to get warmed up? |

What's your point? His 70 value is in C, my 160 is in F.
Room temperature isn't zero either. The question is: If it's 70F outside, then is it normal to take 8-10 miles to raise the oil temp by more than 90F? That seems like a long time. Since we can't see the coolant temperature, we can't tell if that stabilizes earlier. |

Oil temps definitely take longer to get to normal operating temps than coolant/water. When we got our first BMW it took some time to adjust to the temp gauge. On all our previous vehicles the temp gauges showed water temps which usually start creeping up in temps after only a couple miles.
I'd say 8-10 miles for warming up would be considered normal, maybe even longer depending on the air temps. |

This also appears to be a real temp reading, as opposed to the typical water temp gauge, which is programmed to put the needle in the middle for any temp that is in the normal operating range. |

My temp usually hovers around the 250 mark. There are times where is just above the second white mark from the left after considerable driving times. I have taken pictures for the service department just incase. Things seem to be normal where they are. I know the summer outside temp isnt helping either (since I'm located in AZ).

Thanks for the responses.
My 335i tends to run between 230-250 as well. It seemed a bit high as my 135i ran 20-30 degrees color. All good. Thanks again. |

I am driving an F30 328xi base model with AT.
The oil temp gauge runs about 195F - about 210F, quite a bit cooler than my N55. MPG so far favors the 328xi but only by about 1.5mpg, and that's with 17" wheels/tires for the 328i and lower over all weight. This is on the same roads and routes, driven in the same manner. As I've said, the N20 isn't going to be much different when driven in the same manner as the N55. Now, when you start using the added power of the N55, then of course MPG will be lower, but you're also getting a good bit more power. The power difference is quite noticeable. The N20 is a great and torquey engine. But when you give it more throttle there is no doubt which engine is more powerful and faster. And, the 3.0 is smoother. The N20 is nice for a 4 cylinder but there are some vibes especially at idle, stopped in gear, I feel some vibes through the steering wheel. Nothing bad mind you, but not as smooth as the N55. |

German Autobahn Perspective
During aggressive acceleration on the German Autobahn, my F30 328 will reach 250 degrees but cools off at sustained speeds of 130 MPH.
