I think I know what the OP is talking about. Most people seem to prefer the original versions of the M cars and the mechanical feel of how they drove. The newer cars have so many electronic aids that it can certainly get in the way of the pure driving pleasure.

I really love the newer cars but I know I also have a major love for the OG's as well.

I think Bmw needs to strike a balance between the two.

Yes the i3 is nothing like a "traditional" BMW but I had a chance to drive one during the Team USA driving event this summer and I have to say I was completely surprised by the way it drove. It was pretty quick and handled surprisingly well considering its mission. Now if it only didn't look like the love child of Wall-E and R2D2.

Its a 2600lb car with a CG 9 inches from the ground. It has an instant 200 ftlbs of torque at any speed and the same driveline layout as a 911 (Rear Engine - RWD)

Why would anyone think that wouldnt be fun to drive?

Well considering its riding on 155/70 all season tires and it really wasn't designed to be sporty, I was surprised how fun it was to drive.

It's my vote for the car if there's ever a reboot.

...but seriously. They should never do a reboot.

OK, so maybe this isn't a troll thread.

I'd love to see a new car styled similarly to the E30 M3, small displacement straight six and assisted by (since BMW seem to be heading that way) some sort of petrol driven electric motor. Why not batteries? Weight. Batteries are unnecessary anyway, right?

Unfortunately what we're likely to get is one fat pig after another. Something about the size of the E46 (but with 2 doors) weighing in at 2500-3000 lbs would be perfect.

Yeah, all the pictures I've seen of the M2 left me thinking of John Prescott:

I think I'd prefer an electric assisted I-6 to a turbo six (or since it would be smaller and lighter, thus possibly dangerous for their flagship cars a turbo four )

The howwar!

Obviously a mid-displacement I-6 would be preferable, but I think hell would freeze over first.

You can always make one! Tune the crap out of M52 and stick it in something!

On a more serious note:

Yeah, but is maintaining an E30 really feasible? It's fast becoming a dream car for me, but I'm having a hard time justifying purchasing something so similar to the car I drive now (in usability) that will be such a headache in terms of parts availability and a money pit.

I think I'd rather do a stroker S54.

I'd rather do a stroker S65, but to each their own

So I am in my 981 cruising along a 55 MPH 3 lane (each side) road (which constitutes a back road in DFW ), doing about 70 and I see an i3 at the intersection that I am approaching - he is waiting to turn into the same direction of traffic as I was.

I didn't know what he was doing because there wasn't hardly anyone on the road and he could have pulled out way before I got to the intersection...but as I am almost to the light, he pulls out and (I assume) guns the i3...that thing took off so fast! He matched my speed very quickly and had a huge smile on his face when he saw how surprised I was - I gave him a grin and a thumbs up back and drove on with a lot more respect for that car.

electric power is no joke

I'd take a s62 or s65 for my e46 but lot of work. Would be happy with full build s54 with 350whp.

I wish they would go back to the past. To me, the previous generations of E90 and E46 M3s are more appealing than the latest version of what has become a luxury barge.
Even the M2 has grown in size over the classic BMWs such as the E36 M3, or my 135i for that matter.
