It's the same muffler no difference. Maybe the length of the tips may be different but I doubt it, but that wouldn't affect the install process.

Few have done this when the valve is in the open position. I've heard that there are no issues. Only thing is if you take it in To a dealer and they read diagnostics that will come up.

Neither clamp will work. You have to have a custom exhaust piece made. Or you can have them weld them together.

No not at all, it's because your 428i exhaust is like 2.75" inches and the 335i is about 3.10" I measured it with a caliper. So ultimately and exhaust shop will have to fab up a piece for you that can slide on your 428 exhale and the stock 335 muffler. Then they can either weld them together or use U clams.

In either case it's not hard or expensive don't let them b.s. You!

I had the opportunity to do a more thorough reconnaissance of this rear diff removal/replacement procedure this weekend. This is a partial dry-run for a future diff swap. I’m still deciding between the BMW M Performance Limited Slip Differential (LSD) and another aftermarket clutch based LSD. In the end, I probably see myself going with the BMW M Performance LSD. I will probably keep the original final drive in case I would like to use it as a core unit for aftermarket clutch based LSD in the future.


Swapping out brake pads (equipped with M Sport Brake Option)

I began by swapping out F80/82 M3/M4 brake pads (OEM - Textar) for my original M Sport Brake Pads (OEM - Jurid). It’s been getting colder and I prefer to have a bit less brake dust in the months when I’m can’t wash the car outside as often. Brake fluid remains the same with Castrol SRF.
I’ll miss the better feel of the M3/M4 brake pads. It feels more linear and provides greater braking force at higher speeds, but they’ll be back in action sometime in the spring in anticipation of more AutoX and HPDEs. I always use Permatex Ceramic Extreme Lubricant and never have an issue with noise with hotter/more abrasive pads if applied properly.




Now we begin to remove components to get better eyes on the entire propeller shaft… I simply followed the procedures in the PDF I have attached with this post.

Removing center chassis reinforcement plate.



Removing the complete exhaust. I’m not a fan of cutting the exhaust so I decided to remove the complete exhaust. You’ll need another person to help you (my GF who has a 2016 X3 35i). You’ll also want to have 2 jack stands to support the exhaust.



Slackening (and then eventually removing) center exhaust mount. Requires E10 socket (Inverted Torx bit)



Slackening (and then eventually removing) mounting brackets at axle back (muffler) section.





Loosening the V-band that mates/seals the downpipe to the catalytic converter section of the complete exhaust system. This takes a bit of effort as the bolt and nut are heavily rusted. This is normal. I was able to do it with a standard 3/8” drive ratchet. You cannot re-use this part. It’s one time use which means you better seat it properly when you are re-installing the exhaust.



Exhaust removed.



Once you remove the exhaust, remove the heat shields. You can probably do the LSD removal/install by removing the heat shield furthest to the rear, but I removed both heat shields because I wanted to get a good look at the transmission, transmission mounts, flexible disc, and forward portion of propeller shaft as well.

Thanks for the great write up! I will be getting my M Exhaust hopefully end of next week and plan on tackling this myself as soon is it arrives. Your DIY just convinced me not to bother taking it to the exhaust shop and will be very helpful. Now to call my local Autozone to see if they have the exhaust cutting tool. Just wanted to thank the OP again for taking the time to document the install. I got my CPO 14 335i about a month ago and immediately added the CF Mirrors and CF Spoiler. Also on my list was exhaust and some others items which have yet to be purchased.

My M Performance exhaust arrived today. I stopped by AutoZone on the way home to borrow their exhaust cutter. I can't believe they don't charge a rental fee. Just the refundable deposit. I got home and jacked the car up and put it on jack stands and dove right in. The exhaust cutter cut the exhaust like butter. I was done with the whole swap within an hour including some adjustments. It definitely sounds more agressive. I wasn't after something too loud but instead more subtle and I think I got just that. Take a ride back to AutoZone to return the cutters and get my deposit back and enjoyed the new exhaust sound. Very different sounding for sure. Looking forward to breaking this thing in but this now has be seriously thinking about the MPPK next.

If any of you are thinking about taking this project on yourself, I would encourage you to do so. It's really easy and I am very glad I didn't pay somebody to do it for me. Granted, I am long time DIY'er but this was really simple even for somebody who hasn't much experience working on cars and it is very self gratifying.

Here are some pictures. I need to black the lower part of the rear bumper out so it looks like a diffuser. That or get the M Sport bumpers which is on my list of things to do. Vinyl wrap may have to do in the meantime which is be another project I will take on myself.

Great job, those CF tips look so sweet. The satisfaction of doing it yourself and enjoying the fruits of your labor nothing like it.

The exhaust will get louder give it about 1,000 miles that packing will settle and you'll love it.

VIDEOS:

Took some videos before and after I bolted on the M Performance. I used my Iphone5 so hope it came out ok. I pointed the speaker towards the exhaust for better sound.

EDIT: Here is the video after 1000 miles. Its "borken in". I think it sounds deeper, and it did get louder. I expected this reading up on past threads. I think its the perfect amount of exhaust noise and its not intrusive at all. If you get a killer deal on it I suggest get it.
Its a warm start, revs are up to 4k, golf tee mod done flap fully open. I started in comfort mode and switched to sport in the end of the video.

Very nicely done, thanks so much for the write up. Did you use replacement hangers or just what came with the car? I can't get the tips to stay high, no matter how I tighten the clamp the tips sit too low. Any suggestions?

No need to replace the hangers. Try to tighten the clamp a bit more and adjust. That's the way it gets set. Not really any other way.

No it was a sport line car and they came with black tips. When I turned my lease in I swapped the tips to my new car .
