Hold loud is cold start - Remus or Dinan on 340i

For those who own a Remus or Dinan exhaust, how much louder is it on cold start compared to stock. I've read some reports that suggest the Remus and Dinan exhausts are really a lot louder on cold start. Only interested in comparing cold start sound volume to stock... I don't believe either are that much louder during driving in comfort mode.

It's impossible to tell how much louder on YouTube videos. Any comments welcome... and maybe clarify if you are talking axle-back or catback

I haven't looked at or owned those exhausts but I'll give my input. It depends if the exhaust has any straight pipe section to the exhaust outlet or if the resonator is removed. At cold start, the waste gate is opened to warm up the catalytic converter quicker so it will get really loud if you have neither resonator or even a valved system.

The MPPSK has no resonators but has 2 valves for each exhaust sides to block gases for the straight pipe sections; these valves are closed at startup (even warm startup) so all the gases go through the muffler. I'd say the system is maybe ~15% louder than stock on cold startup... maybe less, don't recall. I would think other muffler designs may be slightly louder but not by much.

I have the Dinan Catback installed on my 2017 340i. I had the Axleback only installed for about 2 weeks prior to adding on the midpipe.

I will use my Mother-in-law as a reference since she is super sensitive to sound.

Axleback cold start - Its certainly louder than stock but really not a huge bump in volume. I started the car probably 10 times around her and she never said a thing. She did not know I added on the exhaust.

Catback cold start - This is way louder than stock. Like.... you can barely hear the person standing next to you at the initial cold start if you're standing behind the car. I started my car parked next to the mother-in-law at a loud park full of yelling kids. She was sitting in her 2016 750 which has solid noise isolation. The moment I hit the start button - she pretty much snapped her neck looking over to my car to figure out what the hell was going on. In her words - "I thought there was a freaking earthquake". It mellows down after warming up, of course. But its definitely loud and very fun =).

Hope this helps.

When compared side-by-side with a stock 340, my Dinan FreeFlow is noticeably louder, especially at cold start. More than the volume, though, is the change in tone. The tone is deeper and resonates more than stock. I do not have the midpipe, which I think would make it far louder and too much, so I am not planning on getting it.

The resonators in the 340i stock exhaust really drown the sound. Any axleback shouldn't be that much louder than stock as noted. The resonators just don't leave a whole lot of sound to amplify.

I have the Dinan axleback AND the midpipe. Agreed with the comment above that you'll have to raise your voice considerably if you're outside the car and want to talk to someone on the other side of the car at cold start. However the sound doesn't have a bark/harshness or carry like it would if you installed a catless downpipe. I used to have a setup like that on my 335i and it was loud as hell and I was embarrassed to start it. Not so with the 340i, but it's a head-turner when started for sure. I think in a covered parking garage it would be really loud.

Would I buy the Dinan setup again? Absolutely. It sounds brilliant at all RPMs.

With just a catback it will be loud but nothing out of the ordinary. If stock start ups were a 1 or 2/10 then catback would be about a 5 or 6/10. I thought catbacks were loud on startup until I put a downpipe on my car. A full turboback exhaust with no restrictions is easily 10/10 and louder than any other car I've ever heard... not recommended unless you don't live within 3 blocks of other people. I love the sound of a full straight pipe but even I am embarrassed to start my car. I have to do the pedal trick to quiet it down almost every day.
