Intermittent Startup Issue

Hi everyone. I'm having occasional startup weirdness with my 14 335. Sometimes when I start the car it will crank longer than usual and it revs to around 2K RPM for 5-10 seconds and will idle back down to normal. Happened to me yesterday. It doesn't happen all the time and I don't have a CEL or stored faults. Anyone experience this?

Somedays my 328 takes longer to crank over than others. Was wondering the same as you... no rhyme/reason or predictable pattern to it. No codes or errors either.

Also a 2014.

if it' just the battery then I'm cool with it. I'm hoping it isn't a fuel injector or a fuel pump issue. I have an appointment this coming Friday so we'll see what they say. If it WAS a battery issue, wouldn't I receive some type of notification from the computer?

Please update us on what they say... not sure what it is - could be a number of things I suppose (including battery) but I agree... shouldn't there be an error or fault showing?

Im not too worried about it (like you) but definitely interested to hear what dealer says.

I'm not sure about these bmws but usually when a car cranks like that it's a battery or starter issue. Usually the battery is the first to go, take it to an advanced auto and get the battery tested for free

I would also think there would be a message displayed if the battery is going south, but there have been many posts on this and other forums where people are having all sorts of strange symptoms with no message and it turns out to be the battery.

Before we can even suggest this is possibly a battery issue... is the cranking speed slow or normal?

Slower cranking speed is more the sign of a battery issue. Normal speed, I'd be looking deeper. The mention of higher revs than normal start up, is also a sign something is not quite right. Fuelling or ignition.

Battery issues are easy to test. Wouldn't something "deeper" be likely to have codes? Batteries starting to fail don't seem to have codes. BUT at this point who knows?

That is a pretty common issue not just with BMW's. Most cars will take a longer time to crank over when their battery has dropped in voltage. As COKen above mentioned...very easy to test.

I had two of the long-crank starts several months back. It cranked for what seemed like a good 6-10s, and about the time I started thinking I’d have to call a tow truck the car started.

It hasn’t happened again for a good 6 months, so I’m skeptical that the problem is battery-related. Regardless, I’m on the original battery and it’s past due for a preventative replacement (it’s coming up on 5 years old, about as long as you get in Phoenix) so I’ll be swapping it out soon.

I had similar problem with my old e92 n/a direct inj petrol. I was driving the car too gentle for a long time. After some hard pulls on country road the problem was gone. Make sure to go full throttle, when engine at operating temp, at least once monthly.

This is something I do regularly
