How does auto climate control work?

In the winter time my dad starts his x5 and pushes auto the heat temp goes max and so does fan speed.
When i start my 335i i hit auto the temps stay the same as i left them and the fan speed is still 1 bar.

How come mines different?

The fan doesn't ramp up until the coolant is warm enough to actually provide heat. As it warms up the fan ramps up.

Plus it depends on the intensity settings used. I run my system on the lowest intensity, so more gentle air flows even on fast heat up.
