What is this light bulb for?

So I was installing my LED reverse lights and noticed there was another bulb in there. What is it for? I hit my brakes, turn signals, reverse, tried all the light switch settings and it would never light. Any ideas?

I believe it is the light which comes on when you hit the brakes hard. Adaptive Brakelights.

This is the Rear fog bulb. E9X's were the same way, all the pluming is there all it takes to get it working is a slight modification to the switch and some coding.

well which one is it? I guess its safe to assume it never really comes on so ill just leave it as a filament bulb.

Even more confusing: both are correct.

In USA cars, it's the additional brake light that comes on under hard braking.

In euro spec cars, it's the rear fog lamp.

As others have noted, you can get the rear fogs working by 1) modifying the light switch or buying a euro switch and 2) getting it coded to work.

In my e93, no coding was necessary. I just bought the euro switch and plugged it in, and the rear fogs worked.
