I think hamfisted driving for the sake of the spectacle made it look more of a struggle than it was. I definitely went up slopes in the region of 10-15% on my winters on RWD 320D, just with a touch more circumspection as needed on the road!

Another vote here for RWD + winters v 4wd no winters. Winters every time. I've experience with both over the last decade. All about control

A vote here for Xdrive WITH winters, far better than a mere RWD.

I agree with everyone else. Winter tyres on rwd is better than summer tyres on 4wd. Winter tyres on x-drive though is marvelous on snow! As the others say, 4wd aids with friction but not braking or steering.

As an aside, large 4wd cars tend to come with wider tyres, which is absolutely not ideal in snow. A larger surface area leads to more sliding, as anyone who skis knows.

I agree that xDrive with winters must be better than RWD with winters, in the traction stakes at least. But I never ran out of traction in my RWD in pretty extreme conditions (at least the most extreme seen in the south west in 20+ years, which I appreciate is probably a standard winter in the north).

RWD with winters outranks FWD/AWD with normal tyres.

However a FWD with winters rules a RWD with winters.

Basically in the winter RWD come just behind mtb'S

Well, that's a dumb comment, isn't it. With summer tyres on it'll be just as useless in snow as an xDrive with summer tyres.

Think ---> type. In that order.
