Why is it that everytime somebody mentions 8 speed, somebody always says '"too many gears"? FYI, just look at it like a close ratio 6 speed that most people use and 2 overdrive gears for fuel efficiency. You'll never see above 4 or 5th gear at a racetrack unless you are doing over 150 mph.

8 speed auto
I have a 335i with the auto 6 speed and have driven the 8 speed auto on the new 5 series (same engine). I like the smoothness & delivery of the 8 speed alot and it offers much better MPG (30 mpg hwy on the 535i that weighs 4100 lb.) I project that the new F30 335i with 8 speed auto @ approx. 3600 lbs will get at least 32/33 mpg Hwy.

I think the 8 speed is awesome and possibly the best automatic transmission. There's more to owning cars than racing them.
I found this very interesting and can't wait to get my ZF 8-speed f30. |

I don't think the new 3 series will have 8 speed transmission....

I'm pretty sure everything will get the 8 speed. No reason not to.

ZF says the 8HP is six percent more *efficient than the outgoing sixer and nearly as efficient as a dual-clutch automated manual, which ZF also produces. However, the eight-speed is roughly 20 percent cheaper and retains the smooth, torque-converter starts to which U.S. buyers have become accustomed. Furthermore, the 8HP has a system to maintain hydraulic pressure even when the engine isn’t running and is therefore the first automatic that’s compatible with stop-start operation

I think an 8 speed in the 3 series is a no-brainer. Fuel economy standards are becoming very tough, and are stricter for small vehicles like the 3 series. If ZF is comparing fuel efficiency with a DCT, it is probably a dry clutch DCT. A dry clutch DCT is limited in the amount of torque it can handle. One is fitted to the VW GTI. Wet clutch DCT's as used by BMW don't have very good fuel economy due to pumping losses. Note that a 135i with DCT only gets an 18/25 EPA rating. However, I do like the way mine drives. I expect future use of the wet clutch DCT will be confined to low volume vehicles like M series or "is" models.

I don't think this is right. Maybe they are changing for this coming year, but currently the DCT costs $1400 more than the manual on the S4. I recently text drove a manual S4 and it was OK, but didn't wow me. Haven't tried the DCT
