Dinan sport tune

Has anyone tried the sport tuning device from Dinan that sells for around $300?
It's a claimed 25 HP and 60 ft-lbs on the B48 motor and even more on the B58.
Aside from warranty concerns this seems like a bargain.

It competes with the JB+ which is $200. There are some differences but are mostly the same.

The reason the Dinan product is so cheap is because there is no warranty. If there was, you would probably see it priced around 1k or so.

Edit: I have not used either so can't give you an idea of how it drives. I heard that they really wake the car up, but there are also shift delays at WOT

From what I've learned, the Dinan Sport module adds up to 4 PSI of boost via the TMAP sensor only, although it starts to fall off after 4500 RPM because it does not also alter timing and fuel mapping that would be required at higher RPM. Most of its power benefits will occur below that RPM, so if you're driving around on the street, it'll provide some noticeable additional power. If you're heading for the dragstrip or other types of driving at high RPM, it's not going to help much. The reason it is $100 more than the Burger TMAP tuner is that it can be connected to via Bluetooth to change the boost setting from wtihin the car rather than having to manually adjust it from the engine compartment.

I have a N55 , tried both. Very similar results , however, the jb+ gave me a cel and dinan did not. I didn't want that light up so dinan it is ! Also Bluetooth compatible which allows u to go to race mode or valet mode, all from your phone.
Recommend Dinan for those reasons

Is the warrantied version of the Dinan tune worth the extra money?

I have the full Stage 1 Dinan installed on my '17 330i and I definitely suggest ponying up for it.

The tune is seamless. It really changed the character of the car. You feel the extra power throughout the band but especially in the mid-range, accelerating through 20-50 mph is very noticeably stronger. There is also a ton more punch at highway speeds.

I can give more details but the best way to describe it is that for $1200 or so (installed) you can get your B48 to close about 50% of the gap between it and the B58. Definitely worth it in my opinion.

What about the JB+, seems like there are a lot of people in that camp as well. I'm leasing my car so my biggest concern is damaging the turbo or voiding the warranty. Is a tune worth the risk? My car is basically a kid hauler and DD, but I like to have occasional fun on the backroads.

A tune won't void your entire warranty, but you might be denied a claim that could point to the tune as a cause. A mild tune like that won't damage the turbo. Those milder tunes are easily removable, and I've never had any issues with that type of tune. The more complex tunes that connect to multiple sensors produce more power, but they're carefully engineered not to bypass any of the "engine safety" features in your DME - if the oil or IAT gets too hot or detonation is detected, it will pull back the power (fuel and/or timing) to protect against engine damage.

On thing to check is the horsepower claim. Dinan usually advertises in crank horsepower the other vendors use wheel horsepower.

There can be a 10/15% spread between the two methods.

Interesting its 'done' around 4500rpms. My car is flash tuned and I was asked where I wanted the power to come in. Some prefer the low-end but (to me) the massive hit to the driveline on the bottom end didn't sound appealing so I have my tuned to deliver across the powerband rather than top or bottom. Easier on the drive train imo. I haven't seen a good 'tune' thread in a good year plus other than the Dinan Sport that pops up now and then........

Well I'm tempted to give either one of them a try. I don't "need" more power but we all get bored quickly and it would be fun to try something new. Now which one to pick...hmmm.

It's fun for sure. From about 2500 up to 5500/6000 the car pulls like a train. Being just a 4..you do have to remember to pull it down a couple of gears to get it to react...tuned or not, its lugging in 8th gear lol.

One of our best sellers

It is similar to the JB+ except it comes with bluetooth connectivity if you want to change boost

We offer both with 14 days money back guarantee

Thanks Mike. What do you guess the increase in peak (crank) HP would be on the 430i? Is there a dyno of just the B48?

Yes, because with just a TMAP connection, it only adds boost, and doesn't address additional fuel or ignition timing beyond 4500 required to continue to make more power. Most of the "full" tunes offer power across the rpm range, but some folks prefer it all at the top end like the "M" engines, particularly for track use. The Dinan Sport is aimed at "normal" street driving, just like the JB+.

If you went with the sport tune, and you didn't feel terrible handy and assumed that you would fuck it up and want someone else to install it, would you let the dealer do it? Given the lack of warranty?

Or does anyone have a good place to have it put in in the Chicagoland area? I know it's only a few wires, but having never done it, id love to not do it myself

If you can unplug a device from the wall, plug in a power strip, and then plug your device into the power strip, you can install the Sport tune.

I love trivial tasks, I just know I have messed up some "easy" shit in the past haha.

I guess I need to see a video, if it's real that easy I'll do it. I thought it was like 15 minutes and required a learning curve etc...
