Hard Drive

I was copying music on my hard drive in my garage with the engine not running and I could hear the hard drive, just like in my computer. It's funny they didn't use a flash based drive instead of a traditional hard drive ...

Yup. Cost. I expected NBT to use Flash/SSD, but nope, another rotational disk. Maybe next gen...

The hard drive is useless. If you copy music to it, it sounds TERRIBLE. I just plug in one of those super short thumb drives with 64 Gb, which is plenty of storage space.

I have not had any issues with sound quality.

I think it just copies the music as-is, it's not being transcoding or anything.

Are you importing fairly high bit-rate music?

I think it takes CDROM and converts to mp3. You don't need to have a golden ear to hear it.

I think it's a really low bitrate mp3. Because the ones I purchase online sound better than the cd converted mp3 that the car does...

I think they are Toshiba automotive-grade HDD's. They are made especially for the rigors of being in a car.

Maybe you can replace it with an SSD but they may have software checks to stop that.

CIC (old) based systems have an 80GB drive.

The NBT (newer) based systems have a 200GB drive.

in Australia only comes with 20GB! not many people will use them unless they can have revolutionary ideas for future iOS/Android OS? then i may get the Real Racing 3 and use my real steering wheel and pedal to control the game! That would be awesome.

Pretty sure the 80gb drive only has roughly 20gb available, because of maps, idrive softwae etc...

The CIC based nav system has an 80GB drive of which 12GB is available to you to load music on.

I think the new nav has a 200GB disk and 20GB free for music, but I'm not sure as I have the older CIC based system.
