Need advice: 2012 335i Luxury or wait for 2014 335 M-Sport?

Hi all,

For the last couple months I have been researching and decided finally on waiting to order an almost fully loaded 335 M-Sport(EBII, cold weather, premium, tech, driver and driver plus, dynamic handling, rear shades, high beam assist and upgraded 19's) once the 2014 models come out this fall. MSRP for a 13 is $59,370 with an invoice of $55,075.

When I was getting my recall and oil change done on my 08 328 a couple weeks ago, I made the mistake of wandering around the lot and looking at the F30's they had since I hadn't really looked at one up close. Of course, I find a 2012 335 Luxury Line in Mineral White/Black Dakota with cold weather, parking, premium, premium sound, tech, BMW asst enhanced, BMW apps, and an eye/bank appealing $5000 off sign on the window. MSRP was $54,445, invoice priced at $50,615, which means that MSRP minus that $5k puts it at $49,445, about $1200 below invoice and about $6k less than what the invoice would be on the m-sport(not including the usual price increase that will occur for the '14 models)

Now I know there are suspension/cosmetic differences between the two lines, and that I wouldn't be getting blind spot/lane departure(never had those on a car before anyway), and it would give me the HK sound which I hadn't planned on getting on the m-sport. I'm not 100% sold on the Luxury line wheels, which I could easily change, and I like the Mineral White almost as much as I want the EBII.

Are there any other differences I am missing/forgot about or that I would be missing out on the joy of by going with the Luxury line instead of the M-Sport? To me $1200 below invoice seems like a reasonable deal, but of course there is always room for negotiation

Thanks!

I can see why it is a tough situation. I will leave you with this. There is not much else like having a car "custom built" for you. My humble opinion. Maybe I'm biased...

Can't beat that pricing though, especially pre-negotiation...

Thanks guys for the responses.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't be tracking it, I plan to do some minor upgrades(tune, downpipe, maybe exhaust) regardless of which one I end up with, but nothing too extreme.

It's easy to change the suspension. Aftermarket, OEM upgrades, or whatever.

sport seats would be hard to add and they are a big point of adding the sport or m-sport. with the m-sport you also get the cool steering wheel. more importantly, keep in mind resale of a 2012. Check KBB or NADA and it should help you decide if its worth saving $6K now vs getting a 2 yr (model year) newer car.

that luxury line is fine with the saddle interior but those rims will be a bitch to clean with all the brake dust BMWs put out. Very time consuming unless you pay someone to clean your car. I prefer to do it myself and that was a deciding factor.

I don't know, but consider me the minority when I say go M-Sport. This purchase is one of want, not need nor value. If you are going to spend this kind of money on a new car, which will depreciate like a rock in water, I'd go with *exactly* what you want...it would suck to be second guessing yourself later.

IMO, the luxury line wheels have nothing on the staggered M-Sport 19's, and decent reps are gonna run you at least an extra $1k. The steering wheel, seats, front end, and EBII will make you cringe whenever you see an M-Sport. I think if you aggressively shop, you should be able to get a $500 over invoice price on a new order, and then tack on any qualifying incentives. Only downside will be waiting the order out...

I couldn't agree more with your statements !!

There is a huge difference between the 2012 Luxury line and the F30-335i M Sport. The staggered wheels and tires, the available dynamic handling package, the much improved front and rear styling, the M Sport steering wheel, the available M Sport brakes (at least in Canada, maybe USA soon ?), and the M Sport suspension with lower ride height.

The other factor for the OP to consider is that the car he mentioned is a 2012 model, which means an early production F30. Far better to wait and get exactly what he really wants - a technically updated 2013 or 2014 F30 M Sport.

Two points:

I just got basically this same exact vehicle (luxury line) only 2013 and sapphire black - and I can tell you, you will not regret the decision for a second.

However - i was able to negotiate the same savings (got it down to around 50,000) for lease on a 2013 and ordered it exactly the way I wanted.

On the flip side, I had to wait 6 weeks for it to be built - you can get instant gratification.

Thats a good deal but I got 10k off on a 2012 left over that had a sticker of 58k. Fully loaded 335I. With MY2014 quickly on its way the dealers need the old stock gone. My dealer was honest and said that in the area they are in (upstate NY) they really only sell X-drives and SUV's. So, my 2012 was siting on the showroom floor for over a year. They wound up throwing on a bunch of aftermarket OEM parts to make the car more appealing. Still did not move the car. I found it online and went there with no expectations but was happy when they accepted my offer and I got all the OEM aftermarket parts too. I did have them take of the 20's because they wanted an extra 3k for those. Offer them less, they will take it.

If you are going to be keeping the car for a while - I would order up the M-sport to your specifications. The M-sport does have additional cooling, nice sports seats and steering wheel, good looking 19 inch staggered wheels, etc. If you have summer performance tires, your speed limiter will be 155 MPH rather than 130 MPH should you ever venture onto the wilds of Montana. You will want to add the MPPK which really perks up the whole car.

For me - I chose a BMW because of its sporty character and the M-sport best represents a 3 series short of a full M car.

You should be able to get that 2012 cheaper as a 'good deal' on a bran new one would be invoice and you're not doing much better for a car that's almost 2 years old now.

I'm betting you can negotiate something similar on the 2014 or at least get pretty close and end up with a new car exactly the way you want it. I have a feeling if you really want a M sport the Lux line won't do it for you and you're really not saving that much.

Last year I got basically the same deal you're being offered on my 2012. That was a year ago...

Key here is Lux without DHP means base suspension, a bit floaty, a bit wallowy. MSport has the sport suspension, so even without DHP, it gives more of a BMW "feel".

For the best suspension you could install the M Perf on the Lux line.
That would give you a better handler than an Msport with M adaptive dampers.

However, there are things on the Msport that would be hard to retrofit and will also be quite expensive, namely the sport seats and body kit.
Then there is the M steering wheel that is a few levels better than the Lux line.
Also, a nice set of wheels will cost as well. You could then sell the Lux line wheels, but I don't know the used market for those.
Maybe find a near new set of Sport or Msport line wheels, big savings and they will be stock.

It may look like a savings, but if it's not the car you really want, and then you have to spend more money to get it to handle better than the Lux, and look like an Msport, then where's the savings?
Don't dismiss that the Lux line you are looking at is a 2012 model, so part of the discount is the fact that it's already a model year older, and by this August it will be a 2 model year older F30.
If resale down the line is important, then that's a factor to consider as well.
Consider the actual over all costs, then decide.

My suggestion is to order your very own Msport and go from there.
