so they drove 3 more they had on the lot and they all did it. all the stuff they're doing is now going up the chian from the service center -> local engineer -> bmwna -> germany and back down.. it's been a week...............................UGH
they tried to tell me that if they cant fix it, then it's normal and they'll just give it back.. i explained that their incompetence in their ability to fix it is NOT the same as it being "normal" we'll cross that bridge when we get there, though.

totally unacceptable, if they cant fix it demand they take the car back per florida lemon law(if you want to go that far), get your car back and let them expriment with one of the cars on their lot thats doing it. Not sure who you are dealing with their, but i think this guy Mathew Bittman is in charge, i would be only dealing with him

Hmmmmm this is an interesting topic. Previous Generation BMW's suffered easily from this same problem. The E39 5-series from 1997-2003 was notorious for this. It could be that when they switched from the E90 platform to the F30 platform, in an attempt to make the ride quality smoother and more absorbent, that the front control arm bushings are softer. Therefore giving the control arms more play (shimmy) in that vibration frequency (40-60mph). The E46 had pretty soft bushings and it rode better than the E90 but a lot of the times these bushings had to be replaced cause since they were softer it would absorb impacts more at the bushing instead of transferring it through other components. By 25K thru 35K miles a lot of E46 needed bushing replacements. When the E90 was released I remember reading that the bushings were stronger but not as absorbent as in the E46 which caused the E90 to have a firmer ride, yet most E90's never had this SHIMMY at the steering wheel problem in general.
So.....IMO I would say that the problem lies at the front lower control arm bushings not being strong enough to keep the car from shaking at those speeds.

I follow the bushings reasoning, but why some and not others?
The 328i I tried (18" wheels and standard suspension) driving 80 miles over a while range of surfaces, was completely free of any spurious vibrations from the chassis or steering. Have any of the problem cars had a different wheel set fitted, to eliminate any wheel/tyre issues? That's the first thing I'd be pushing for after a rebalance not sorting it. HighlandPete |

There may be a bad batch of steering systems or rims or something along those lines. If it was a bushing it would be felt continuously whatever it is it is out of trueness or balance- it also could simply be the roads of an area and "tram lining" when the car gets in the light ridges of the road it can pull or vibrate. Happened to me all the time in my E90 ZSP in certain areas but then would vanish on new pavement. This is not a global problem so it is not a gross lack of engineering. The issue with the E90 was never really the bushings anyways it was the RFTs not absorbing anything and transferring it to the bushings causing them to fail- if they made them any harder or softer the issue would still have been present the tire brands did not meet the specifications at launch. The new RFTs feel little difference to standard low profile tires so that is not the issue. The E60 had steering angle sensor issues at one point that had similar symptoms. If Fleet says there is already a different part then they may have made an engineering change although I am sure it is because of all the negative reviews the car received for steering and they went with the upgraded rack/software from another model (Z4 35IS).

The car doesn't vibrate. The steering wheel does

Have they actually tried different wheels on the front, to eliminate it being a wheel issue?
Typically there will be some vibration through the car along with the steering wheel, if it is a wheel issue. Is it surface influenced, or constant, whatever the surface? I ask one obvious question, is the steering wheel vibration a typical 'wheel shake' tremble, or is it a much higher frequency, as if it is from the steering rack/mechanism itself? If driving on centre, does it ease off, and come on stronger as you just inch the wheel in either direction? HighlandPete |

they haven't switched out the wheels yet because they've tried it on 3 others with different wheel/tire combos and it's happened on them, too (i assume modern and luxury lines).
i'll describe it this way: you could be on the smoothest road (freshly paved...or concrete, even).. close your eyes and drive from 30-70 mph and the ride will feel like you're floating on air.. won't feel a thing ..IF you hands are off the wheel. open your eyes, and with your hands of the steering wheel, you'll see the steering wheel vibrating left and right a few degrees.. has no effect on the direction or ride quality, but it's visually and physically perceptible.. to a significant degree. i should have video'd it. it's not road feel or the typical BMW sporty feedback.. it's an internal problem. the guy was like, "well, bmw's definitely have a lot of feedback and a sporty feel.." ..well i've had 2 other bmw's and neither does this. lol

I had this issue on my base with 17", but it seems to be slowly disappearing...
I have over 2500 miles on my car now. I didn't notice the vibration at all the last time I drove it. Has anyone else noticed the vibration going away at all? I'm in Florida too, btw. |

yeah, thoughtmaybe it was just a bump on the tires that needed to be worn down.. so we drvoe it for 500 miles.. anymore than that, i shouldn't have to do to make my $50k car drive better than my $20k volkswagen lol

Could it be caused by the runflats developing flat spots from sitting for long periods of time? I know on my Corvette, the first 40-50 miles I drive in the spring after sitting all winter, I get some vibration through the wheel, then it slowly goes away.
