After driven 2500 miles it is still there so i brought the car in last tuesday, picked it up atthe end of the day.

They balanced all wheels and rotated the tire on the rims....

They said, now it is gone, we tested it...
Guess what, nothing has changed....the steering wheel shakes at 40-60 mph and i feel in the steering that the car doesn't float smooth but is "searching its way...

Drives me mad
yep. ours is getting lemoned...and i'll be starting a class action against BMW in a few months.

i feel it PLENTY in mine. : i dont drive with my hands off the wheel, so it's not like i discovered it by accident. i felt it shaking in my hands.

Ok, lemon law I can see, but a class action for steering wheel vibration? Seriously, wtf?

This is really weird.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I had this problem, but it seemed to lessen in intensity as I put more miles on the car.

Yesterday, while driving between 40 and 60 mph, I could kinda see the vibration a little. Not nearly as much as I could at first, but definitely just a little.

Today, driving down the same road at the same speeds, I couldn't detect it at all.

It seems to come and go for me.

What could be the explanation for that?

I noticed that too. Mine was real noticable a couple days ago. Today I couldn't feel it at all. It must have something to do with the electronics of the rack.

Deff electronics. If it is happening on and off you would need to test it on the same exact road just to be sure it's not road debris or something.

If I had this issue I'd definitely want a different set of wheels with a different brand of tires fitted, simply to see if it changed the vibration. Something is generating the vibration, it is either coming from the road, or something like the stepper motor in the steering rack is generating it.

For those with the problem, when it changes, does it change with ambient temperature and/or distance driving? My thinking.... warm/cold tires.

Anyone with a car built from March 2012 onwards having this problem ?

The steering unit was changed from March 2012 production
Also, 335i standard steering is different from 328i.

Anyone with Variable Sport Steering having the issue ?

Well, I ordered mine on March 6th so I hope that I don't have any issues. I'll let you know when I get it.

Mick what is the 'SE' model you've ordered? I know they have this in the UK but I haven't heard of it in the US.

The SE is the base model. It's just the code that BMW uses.

+1

BMW resolved the issue. He only has a little inconvenience and hurt feelings to assert as sustained damages. This is not the foundation for any lawsuit, much less a putative class complaint.

You do not have the foundation for a claim; there is no tort based in whining.

Is this isolated to F30 328s?

Haven't read every post but seems so

I didn't buy a 36mpg 328i to drive around an X5 that costs a friggin fortune to drive.

APRIL 17, 2012..UPDATE

still in the shop.. that means that they've now had the car longer than we have.. ! (we had it 10 days, they've had it 12)

Talked to the service advisor and he said it's time to call new car sales and talk about getting into another car, because he' hasn't heard anything from BMWNA/Germany and there's little chance theyre going to be able to remedy the situation.

Maybe they'll swap us out for an X5 diesel!?! We'll probably move over into a 528i...that gets great mpg, too, right? same n20 motor?
I just dropped off my 328i modern line today for the same reason. They rebalanced the wheels but still felt the vibration, so I left it and took a 335d loaner.

They called me later and said they haven't heard from BMWNA yet, but now after reading this, I think the problem is more than a simple fix!!

I might just call up my dealer(sister dealer to the OP) and tell them about this and just tell them not to bother and just order me a new one

Have already had 2 cars lemoned by them before. Shit, if they have a 135 on the lot i might be test driving it
