Moving to Chicago and Have ?'s
Hi all,
I'm relocating from warm Charleston, SC to the windy city and have a couple questions. I'll be ordering an F30 335 in the next few days. How essential is xdrive? I'll be spending majority of my time in downtown Chicago and surrounding neighborhoods. Could I survive with RWD and winter tires/wheels? I really like the 19" 403M wheels however it looks like they are available with summer tires only.. Do any of you guys run this setup all year around? If so, any feedback? Thanks! |

you can 1000% survive w/ RWD & snows. Chicago has zero hills and aside from the occasional 1-2 day snowmageddon the roads are clear.
If you're living downtown there will be no concerns. If you're living in a neighborhood where your garage access is via an alley you may have some occasional clearance issues but that's about it.

Thank you for the replies, very helpful. Anyone with the 19" 403M wheels that can chime in? I'm assuming with the summer tires they come with, a winter tire/wheel setup is necessary.. Thoughts?

A RWD with winter tires will beat an AWD with summer tires. I lived in New Hampshire for 3 years with a RWD 3 series and all-season tires. It got dicey some times, but certainly driveable (with appropriate care and caution, obviously). I live in Boston now with a 335 Xdrive... Matt |

I'm getting my 335 with the 18's and most likely going to put some winter tires on them. I will probably buy an aftermarket set of 19's with summer tires then for when the winter is over.

I got my F30 with Performance Tires on 18" rims with RWD. So far this winter I have been doing fine with them. When the roads are snowy, I find myself spinning my wheels for a while at stop lights and I always give an extra cautious distance when stopping, but so far it hasn't been too bad. I would highly recommend snow tires though. The only reason I don't yet is cause I don't haven't had the time to purchase any.

Moved from a Rwd with snows to an xdrive 335i. Night and day difference. We have been getting a decent amount of snow so far this season and the xdrive has proven its worth. No issues accelerating at all, where my Rwd would need to be babied at EVERY stop which gets annoying.
Once I get summer wheels I may switch to winter tires on my stocks. The car would be invincible!

I have AWD and Blizzacks, I drive 60 miles a day, mostly highway. I have made it through winters in a Mustang with summer tires, so I know anything can be done. I realize what I have is over kill, but I now have two litte ones in the back seat, so I'm just trying to be safe. It is insane how amazing it drives in the winter. If I were ordering a new 335 living here, XDrive would be a must for me. In two years, it has never slipped no matter what the conditions.
