Help Me Get Rid of This Rust

Hey Everyone,

I've been lurking here for some time and recently bought my '14 328 and absolutely love the thing.

But after picking her up from the dealer, I noticed some rusting on the brakes. It's not on the disk or really anywhere that would remove the rust by driving, and I want to get rid of it as it's unsightly and I don't need it damaging the car in any way.

I was thinking a simple wire brush would do the trick, but I know you all know better than I do.

Here's a (massive) pic: As you can see the rust is just in front of the disk... Embarrassed to say I don't know what the name of that part is...

That's the normal rust on the hub and un-swepted portion of the rotor. You can clear with wire brush, steel wool, etc, but unless you paint or powder-coat that area, it will come back. Just the nature of untreated iron.

I appreciate that Orion. I figured it was a non-issue but I knew I'd find the correct answer here. What's the best practice for painting or powder coating the area? As in what paint should I use to coat the area?

Thanks a ton for the guidance.

There are several threads on here regarding painting calipers and rotors. Also if you do a google search on : "Painting rotor hubs", you will get a slew of hits. Some folks warn that if you paint the rotors hubs (non-contact surfaces) you may have to have your wheels re-balanced, but unless you really fail at a uniform spray pattern, I doubt that will be an issue. Have fun!

I used silver high-temp BBQ paint from a rattle can at the local hardware store. Matches the OEM zinc finish well.

On the hubs. Same spot, same rims.

Its an old trick I learned from a vintage bicycle builder to polish chrome.

Hahaha small world! I'll have to take your word for it then. How long does a finish like that usually last?

The original finish remains, you just use the tin foil as an abrasive to remove the rust. The rust scrapes off and the foil is softer than the metal so it wont scratch.

Do you coat it or paint it after scraping off the rust? Seems to be a common second step.

Nah. Just cleaned it up. I'm sure the rust accumulated while it was sitting outside in the elements at the dealership. I know it was there for a few months. I'm my garage, that wont be happening as I enjoy detailing my car. Very therapeutic for me

next time you do brake rotors, buy ones that have that section painted already.

I have the same issue however I cleaned the rotors and painted them with G2 caliper paint.

They look good however after a good rain I get rust water coming from the between the rotors as the vanes are also rusty.

I was about to pull the trigger on some R1 Concepts Geomet rotors.

Has anyone had any experience with these rotors?

You can get a rust primer at the hardware store and then paint it with an epoxy, or shop for pre-painted rotors like someone already said.

The easy way to fix this is to use a small wire wheel in a drill, go over the hub and remove the rust, and spray paint it with Zinc based paint. Rust here is normal.
