I can change these from metric to imperial manually through iDrive vehicle settings and the system remembers the changes so not sure why this needs "coding" ?

Thanks for the inputs - they make sense with regards to the insurance company. So it's at one's own risk (aka I won't be doing it to my parents!)

On the comments about it being no issue for warranty - does anyone know that for a fact? I mean what's stopping BMW saying 'oh your reverse camera is not working? We noticed you've reprogrammed it to be on all the time - it wasn't intended for that' or even worse 'I'm sorry your car crashed due to an electrical systems failure because it seems that you've been reprogramming your software, and it's messed it up...'

I guess the real test is that I should be able to call BMW tell them what I'm doing and if it doesn't invalidate the warranty they'll have no issues saying 'ok'?

Small things for eg:- like changing the startup logo, switching on the rear lights for DRLs and all these features which are not given to you until you price it up but can be activated by coding its known to even BMW or the dealership that anyone having access to the system can do it be it an individual or a indy. In my old E46 the drive away lock i got it coded by the local indy but the car was still under manufacturer warranty and never had any issue when i had a electrical issue with the lights if that is what is making you scared.

If you call BMW and ask will it invalidate the warranty they will say yes so you have to get it done at the dealership for your safety which is an indirect marketing the end result which you will realise with the SA girl standing with the invoice.

Yeah interesting post. I guess if BMW or an Indy can do it and it doesn't invalidate the warranty, then surely I should be allowed to do it. There's no qualification per se to amending the software on the cars, right?

I would like the boot to close automatically with the press of the button or even the interior button. It's really annoying - e.g. in my E61 if the tailgate is closing but you start the engine, it'll stop half way. You can't then make it close unless you press the button on the actual tailgate. Annoying.

So what are all the software mods you guys have done - there must be more nice stuff to do...

This one is very easy to do, I've enabled it both from the key fob and interior button.

but is it worth the cable outlay and software token cost. Does the same cable/software work for the E61?

No, only with the F10 newer 5 series.

If there is only one item you want to change it is not really worth it, probably better to see if there is a member near you that can help? Where are you based?

Yeah you're right. Will see when I get the car then - might be able to live with moving my butt now and again.

On my Touring I can open and close the boot via the key fob as standard. Won't that be the same on the saloon ?

Saloon doesn't have powered boot. The key fob unlocks the boot allowing it to spring open. Close is by muscle power

Dials are a function on the Pro Nav system only.

Seriously you can close the boot with the key fob without extra coding? That's mint!

Well you can close it as standard but you have to hold the key fob button down, and you can't do it via the button inside the car. The change with coding is that I can now just press either button once, and it will close all the way automatically.

It always felt a pain to hold the button down but also if you let go too early it would stop, then if you pressed it again it would go back up rather than continuing down.

I agree that sounds much more convenient. Is there anyone near Leicestershire who has access to the necessary coding kit ?

Can you do the same for folding door mirrors to avoid having to hold down the key fob button ?

ohhhhhhhhh...... so you have to hold it down the whole time it's closing? That's lame! I mean the button on the tailgate, once pressed will automatically close. What's the 'safety' in making someone continuously press the remote button to close the boot?! Flipping 'health and safety' contingent in the designers studio trying to justify their pay!
