Removing RFT's
So i'll be leasing a Msport with the optional 19's How long do the RFT usually last. I was planning on driving on them for 5k and remove them and get either Continental DW or Michelin PSS not sure on which yet. Then when it gets close to lease turn in install the RFT back on. Has anyone else done something similar.

Yeah planning on doing alignments and checking tire pressures often as i will be doing all the work.
I've had the DW's on my Jetta sportwagon tdi which i liked, wet traction was insane, dry was great, but they felt weird the first 500 miles like wondering on the freeway. I know you really can't go wrong with the PSS but will they last at least 20k miles and are they worth 300 bucks over the DW's.

I am doing the same thing, with the addition of winter tires in the mix. Next spring I am taking off the summers (which only had 600 miles on them before putting on my winters). I will drive it for 2 summers on Mich SS (non run flat) then for the last summer I will put the OEM run flats back on, turn it in with around 6000 miles on them. If I am going to pay for new tires during the lease I want to be using them and get non run flats, especially considering how much the OEM run flats cost, no reason to wear those down...

I managed to get 18K out of RE050 which have pretty lousy treadwear ratings. Have you compared @ Tirerack? |

Would there be any chance of damage by removing the RFTs? I'm thinking doing the same thing so I can install the winter tires for a few months and the mounting the RFTs back until I get them a little wear out. I'm planning on using the stock wheels for winter tires only and buy after market wheels for summer tires. Thanks...

As long as the tire shop has a good machine it shouldn't affect the tire removed at all. Just tell them you are saving the tires.

That way I get full use of the better tires I choose. I ran the DWS on my 135i, which worked fine for winter and were great during the rest of the year. For my Msport I'm either getting the new RE970's or another set of DWS, and storing my S001's. I've got about 2700 miles on the S001's. |
