Missing RTTI Info

Hello,

So there seems to be a big difference between the roads covered by RTTI on their website compared to the data we get in car. Its bloody annoying because a lot of the smaller roads are where the delays are!

They clearly have this data because you can view it on the website, so that begs the question, why are they not transmitting it to the car?

I have just emailed BMW about this but I was wondering if anybody has spoken to BMW as well and what response you got?

Thanks

Exactly why I always ran Waze alongside it as well, so didn't even bother with it this time round!

I've just downloaded Waze and it looks good.

But when you say run Waze alongside it, can you run Waze through iDrive?

Surely it would have been quicker to google "Waze" to get to the website than to post the question on here?!

Funnily enough, it's waze.com

Thanks for the post. I hadn't noticed that the maps on the website had better RTTI coverage than the in-car system. I believe the nav systems use HERE maps. The iOS HERE app shows similar coverage to the in-car RTTI, so it will be interesting to hear what BMW have to say.

If you've got a Connected Drive login you'll find it under Maps.

Nope when I say alongside I mean if I ever used the BMW Nav I'd also have Waze running on my phone for accurate traffic.

Another benefit of Waze is you get mobile camera warnings Once Waze saved my bacon when Cyclops didn't warn me of an upcoming mobile van!

Finally had a response today!

"Thank you for your email about your RTTI product. I’m sorry to hear this – I can understand why you’re frustrated.

I’ve carefully looked in to this for you, and a TMC location is required on roads with RTTI. So if the road does not have TMC camera on it, it will not have RTTI.

If there’s anything else I can help you with, please get back in touch."

Seems very odd!

I'm just finding my way round the navigation, and TBH, I think it's atrocious. I've just paid 35K for a car which now has a TomTom stuck on the windscreen. I'd really hoped to be able to ditch the TomTom and have it all built into the car, For anyone who has a normal commute in the UK, decent traffic info is essential. Goggle maps does this for free. Pro Nav is a 900 option, and it sucks balls. What is the point in traffic info which does not do minor roads? If there is a problem on a major road, you need to know what's happening on the minor roads to provide any kind of effective reroute.

The connected drive stuff just appears to be so complicated and constantly changing it feels like a smokescreen for the fact it's just not very good.

For example, we were quoted 100 quid per year for 50GB's worth of data before we got the car. We now have the car, and it's changed to 11 quid per month for 1GB, which makes the hotspot totally worthless. Who is going to pay that? How are you supposed to make a sensible decision when the dealers can't give you the correct information?

I love the car, but I thought the tech was going to be class leading, and it's now just looking like an expensive joke.

Pile of utter crap then if so! And explains why it shafted me on several occasions. Want decent traffic, then aftermarket really is the only way.

Couldn't agree more that if a major road is stuffed then the minors are vital to be included too.

I said it on here a few times before, the in car system isn't a patch on something like TomTom. That said TomTom specialise is navigation, BMW don't. It's a shame the car doesn't come with a recognised nav company like TomTom or Garmin.

It will be interesting to see whether Apple Carpay, and the android equivalent when available, reduce sales of or upgrades of built in nav's with the use of TomTom app, Google maps and Waze etc

I think that may well be the way ahead. Im sure the car manufacturers may well be happy with it too. The cost of producing, R&D and updating built in bespoke car systems must be expensive for them. Most of the car companies use some form of license from Tom Tom/Garmin/third party etc for the mapping engine anyway.

Google, Tom Tom et al have far bigger budgets and capacity to produce usable systems via an app. I dont think I've ever seen an OEM system in any car that that works half as well as even the cheapest off board system. Lets hope the manufacturers start to just offer a basic infotainment system that has great integration with Apple/Android and allows the user to drive it from their smart phone. I would much prefer an option to be 'just give me a big HD screen and a method to connect please'. I personally have Google maps running on my phone because the mapping and random RTTI on the OEM system is below par (despite BMW having one of the better systems).
