435i Advice

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hello everyone! My names Jon and I had a couple of questions regarding my 2015 Black Sapphire Metallic 435i. I leased the car a couple of months ago and have began to notice some 'imperfections'. I've heard a few different responses some of them ranging from "leave it alone its a leased car" to "fix it and get your car detailed. Most of what I noticed look like clear coat scratches. I have also heard that getting a Black Sapphire Metallic car buffed will just cause more swirls and ruin the paint. None of the scratches I have are deep and most of them are so difficult to see that you need a flashlight to really see them but they annoy the crap out of me. Attached will be some images of the scratches under a lot of light (Garage light and a flashlight) Any opinions or recommendations?

I agree with you, those are very annoying. At this point the dealer is going to be of the opinion that they have happened in the time you've had the car. So it's unlikely you'll get any warranty coverage. As to whether to repair them I'll let others with more experience with BSM paint give their opinions.

I highly doubt they are gonna charge me for these scratches especially since we have leased before and they didn't say a word with scratches looking far worse than these. Im more annoyed myself but a lot of people are telling me since the dealer isn't gonna charge me for these anyways so whats the point of trying to get them fixed.

Looks like an easy fix. Start with Mothers Scratch Remover. May take multiple passes.

If it bothers you its an easy fix with a rotary and some good 3 stage paint correction kit

I've heard that compounds like Mothers Scratch Remover and Meguiars Scratch X 2.0 dull the paint and actually come out looking worse. Anyone with Black Sapphire Metallic paint have experience with using Scratch x 2.0/ Mothers Scratch remover or experiences with getting your car buffed. I wouldn't mind paying someone to buff and detail my car I just want to see how other owners feel about their paint after getting it either buffed and detailed or using these scratch removers.

Ahhh yes, the BSM paint. Had it for three years in my previous lease. Same exact issues. The black paint accentuates the swirl marks more than other paints. You can fix it as others have pointed out, however, I decided not to do it and returned my car at end of lease as is. No issues whatsoever with fees or wear tear costs. Didn't pay a penny. I babied my cars previously. However, became more flexible and accepting regarding the car's regular wear. those swirl marks are regular results on this black paint from washing your car. They aren't real scratches. Nor are they at all deep. It does bother me, however, the BSM looks so beautiful from few feet away that I decided not to bother with correcting the swirl marks. unless im really cm away from the paint, I cant it them. Good luck dude.

you could prolly do that by hand with a good 2 stage compound. M105 + M205 + whatever wax you like.

I have not experienced difficulty with the BSM paint. I would recommend picking up some ScratchX (http://www.autogeekmobile.net/megscratxfin.html). If you have a buffer, use it with an orange lake country pad. If not, it will work just as well by hand. Those scratches will be gone. You could also hit it with some 1500 and 2000 grit wetsanding if the scratches are a little deeper, then follow up with the ScratchX and a polish of your choice.

I have a pretty solid background in vehicle detailing so feel free to send me a PM with any questions. I recently did a complete Menzerna/BlackfireIce detail on my BSM and successfully removed a few scratches like the ones you have. See thread below...

Thats what I was planning on originally. The winter will probably just bring more imperfections.

I have BSM on both vehicles now and the past 3 also.

Those aren't bad scratches, or at least most of them. The scratch X would be good, just follow up with a decent polish and sealant.

This will take a complete paint correction of the car, but you can do this yourself. You've already gotten some good tips in earlier posts on what products are advised.

Mother's produces better results. I have both Mother's and Scratch X.

That is annoying. I've had similar.
But -- best part is you are leasing (very smart). It's not your car - I wouldn't worry too much time about it. Push that pedal to the floor often and smile.
