Suggestions for iDrive Programmable Memory Buttons
I'm having trouble finding practical uses for the iDrive Programmable Memory Buttons outside of radio stations, which is not overly helpful in my opinion with the ability to scroll through them in the heads-up display.
Every single "unique" use I can think of - such as calling up the Trip Computer or selecting something in Connected Drive - is NOT supported! I couldn't even figure out how to program it to call up a specific navigation destination (and I thought you could). Any suggestions for how you've programmed your Memory Buttons?

I've had my car 11 months and I have never touched let alone use the memory buttons. As you said, I dont see a lot of practical use for these mainly because I would not remember what I programmed in the first place.

If you hold your finger over the button without pressing it, it will show what the short cut is.

1. My home address
2. My work address (use both of these daily as the ARTTI works very well at dynamically routing me around rush-hour traffic). 3. XM Chill 4. XM EDM 5. XM Progressive Talk 6. XM BBC World Service 7. Split Screen (Useful sometimes) 8. iDrive Display Off (Useful for night driving) |

Directions to work from wherever I am, and directions home from wherever I am are both handy, particularly since I have two big options between the GWB and Lincoln tunnel. Checking both when I hop in the car can save me some time.

There are 2 absolutely huge threads in the Navigation forum about this. They are really really useful and everything you mentioned as not working is 100% programmable! Just long press the button on the right setting! I have 2 for home addresses and use the rest for trip computer, board computer, quick call the gf, and the rest for Quick split-screen options. I like to keep the splitscreen off and activate the one I need when navigating. (Even though I can see it in the HUD but it allows my passengers to follow better plus I still sometimes have the habit of looking over there from in my E90). I really like these buttons

I've programmed mine for radio, weather radio (coded), aux/USB media, system check, TPMS (coded to include temperature and pressure), average speed/mileage, trip computer, and the last one to shut off the screen (good for night driving). I don't have NAV - I use a 7-in. Garmin instead which is mounted just below the climate control buttons.

I use the following:
I have a few dedicated to people I frequently call so they're readily available. One is dedicated to "Cancel Navigation", another is set to my home address in my navi. Another is set to BMW Apps so it'll quickly pull up the weather and what not. I hardly ever use that but it's there for when I need it. |

It worked for me. Initially for the TPMS and the messages, I got the same error. But when I went back to the screen right before those screens and tried it, the programming worked. Play with it a little more.

Yeah, the buttons are downright awesome, and I like how to the untrained eye, they don't look like they do much.
I've had passengers watch me hover over the buttons and express amazement. I'm sure other companies have the same functionality, but it makes the stack look so clean. I use mine for last destination list, think alternate route, messages, wife, home, etc. Just play around with them to get to the right savable screen or the screen just before the option you'd like to save.

One of the confusing things for the buttons is that you have to store the selection for the screen you want, not the actual screen.
For example: for sport displays go to vehicle info, and highlight (but don't click) sports displays. Then press and hold the preset button to set sport displays as a preset. If you try setting a preset while you have the sports display open it will say function unavailable. Also my settings (no NAV) 1- phone contact 2- phone contact 3- phone contact 4- TPMS 5- sports display 6- efficient dynamics display 7- trip computer 8- screen brightness |
