Hi, looking for some help / advice.
Decided to have a look underneath the car and noted oil / greas residue near the rear drive shaft end, which is connected to the transfer case (not the rear diff end) - I removed protection trim to have a good look - nothing obvious from where the oil / greasy residue came from - any idea what it could be? Obvious suspect for me is prop shaft bushing but it looks very clean - also, its not the rubber bushing instead its metallic part mostly with rubber bushing where the hex bolts are inserted - perhaps whatever bushing is in, it is liquid filled and that has perished now and caused the leaky residue ? I tried to look for play and had a good feel with hand - everything looked tight and dry but yes there is this greasy / oily residue- driving wise, car is fine no obvious noise or excessive vibration that I could feel - although, on my recent road trip to Europe, despite having new tyres and balancing done at BMW dealer, I could feel a slight vibration at 130 to 140 mph on the Autobahn which I was so unhappy about! Only slight vibration which shouldn’t be there!!! - I am now thinking after what I have noted today that maybe the prop shaft bushing was the cause! Greatful if xdrive members can share their take on my issue, Many thanks |

Is it possible you may have picked up some road splash??
Try cleaning it off and see if it re appears, obviously if the bush has bled out there may be fluid left, but I imagine the difference in play on both sides would be noticeable.
