I have been experiencing the 2nd gear grind in my 2016 328i 6mt
As early as about 1800 miles
Any other newer f30 owners experiencing this? Or was the Mt issue addressed over the years

I took it in 3 times to the dealership and each time it was returned to me with "could not duplicate"
I went with the tech on 2 drives and he said my Mt was smooth like butter
We switched and I drove back ... of course my car feels fine when I am driving with the tech

I usually feel it during normal driving
Maybe one out of 10 shifts going from first to second
Just a slight grind as I get about midway into the 2nd gear ... or finishing the shift all the way

One time the gearbox would not let me shift from 3rd into 2nd, even with a blip of the throttle
Like physically resisting
So I had to go back to neutral and then back into 2nd

Does this sound like a synchro issue like the others?

How was the tranny Faulty? I had to have mine replaced around 42k miles or so because my 2nd gear Synchro got lunched.

Sounds like mine. Its a synchro from what you are describing. I found the easiest way to get in in gear was to drive mega granny style and when going from 1st-> 2nd, clutch in all the way, let the rpms fall completely and then change into 2nd and you should be having an easier time going in. Mine was really bad with any type of rapid shifting, not banging the gears but any sort of rapid shifting for sure.

It mainly happened after I started really shifting the car Hard while testing tunes. Like banging the gears. I would wind it up in first and try to grab second and would get a little grind.

Tried it a couple times this morning and I don't get a grind. I do however get a loud sort of pop noise when going into 2nd and 3rd only. Is this normal?

I'm seeing a lot of 2013 335i owners with this issue on this thread! Maybe a dodgy batch in that year? But to my mind BMW gearshifts have never been great... I had E90/92, very notchy and never particularly smooth into 2nd and an F30 320d which wasn't much better. I've just ordered a 340i 6MT based on all the praise it's been given on another thread... hope I won't regret it, was thinking of going sport auto 330i but everyone said NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Still I suppose I'll have the 3 year warranty and I rarely keep cars much longer than that so we'll see..!!

Yeah my tranny had to be replaced not too long ago. I had a 2nd gear synchro go out.

Sucks something so simple is having manufacturing issues. Only explanation for such premature failure. Now hopefully it's catching the attention of BMW and they are investigating the problem.
I agree to a point... BUT, and I may be wrong, I would bet the auto boxes experience far more issues than the manuals!! On top of that, if your auto box packs up my guess is you're stranded, whereas a manual will usually start 'playing up' long before it actually packs up!

E90/92 M3 6MT super common and known issues with syncros. Doesn't surprise me the issue carried over to the F series cars.

ZF8 tick that box next time.

It's an expensive option if, like me, you've always been a manual man! And surely a company like BMW have had enough years in the business to be capable of producing at least a half decent manual box!!

ZF8 is a free option on f cars. But I understand about being partial to manuals. Fun and nothing replaces the 3rd pedal.

I hope I don't run into any issues with my trans. Hitting 48k soon she's still a baby. I wonder if I will get problems when I add performance mods this upcoming winter.

Just brought my car in at 45,000 miles with the same issue, after describing the factors (higher rpm, under load, etc) the foreman was able to replicate and SA said I'd be getting a new transmission. They also asked if I wanted to get the clutch replaced at the same time since it would cut the labor by ~$1500, but it'll still cost $2000. Not entirely sure whether to go for it since I've only owned the car for a month, but with DC driving there's no telling how much wear the previous owner put on.

my understanding is that the clutch is included in the free maintenance ........
is this not the case?

I've been in denial for a while, suspecting a developing 1-2 synchro issue with my 2013 F31. Every now and then, I'd get the dreaded short grind when pulling out from a stop light and changing quickly into second. It never grinds if I take my time to shift slowly. So today, I decided to test the conditions upon which the grind happens.

The results are anything over 3,000rpm and shifting quickly will result in a grind. The higher the engine speed, the louder the grind. But if I shift slowly and allow the engine speed to drop below 3,000rpm, the grind doesn't happen. It sounds like my 1-2 synchro are on their way out. To be fair, my car has now done almost 40K mostly gentle miles. It's still under extended warranty, so it's probably fortuitous this is happening while I'm covered.

I have booked my car in with the dealership next week for an examination. I hope this will be a painless exercise and due entirely to a bad batch of 6MT made in 2013.

i've taken my car in about ... 6 times for the 2nd gear grinding
always "working as designed" or "cannot duplicate"

i'm taking my car to another dealership for the first time in 2 weeks
maybe the tech at the other dealership will think differently

I recently purchased a used 30k mile 335i that had it's transmission replaced at 8k miles. Service records indicate it was replaced due to "unpleasant sound in second gear", whatever that means. Parts guy says that they have never had to replace a MT and they probably don't go out very often since there are only 6 MTs in stock within North America.

Is changing the transmission oil to something less slippery an option to fix the synchromesh problem, or is the wear too far gone that a replacement 'box is needed. I'm only thinking that the synchro between 1-2 is still working if the shift is not rushed and taken at higher rpms. On a certain level, I think I'd prefer a simple fix like an oil change than a whole new gearbox just in case the techs stuff something else up.

^^^^^ old bump but curious where could one find a remanufactured f30 335xi, 6spd manual tranny other than going to the dealership.
