Winter is around the corner... need to get some tires, anybody suggest best place with great prices for tires?

also do i really need to get run flat tires?

I plan to use the 18" wheels that come with the f30 sport as my winters and get new wheels for next summer as summer tires.

I'm in the same position, currently looking at the Pirelli Sottozero II RFT's, would rather not replace a tire in cold weather.

Also seems to have good reviews, and from my research appears better then the blizzaks.

My sales guy recommended non RFT's because they are softer for winter. I have a 2013 328 xdrive that I picked up a little over a week ago. Still debating if I need winter tires or not this year.

Ordered mine and fully paid for already. Even made the appointment for late November for the switchover. Now, that's planning !!

Luckily a friend of mine sold his 2003 5 series. He needed to get rid of his winters and thankfully they're the proper size for our new F30. Just gotta make the swap when the weather starts to turn...

RF for winter - it's all up to you. If you hate & don't want to change a flat in winter months (due to darkness, cold temp, road safety reason, etc), then pay a bit more and go with them.

The next question is do you want 1) dedicated snow/ice tires, such as Michelin XIce 3; Bridgestone WS70; Nokian Hakka R2, etc or 2) hi performance winter tire, such as Michelin PA 4, Bridgestone LM32/60, Dunlop WS 4D, etc

As you know, there are no PERFECT winter tires out there. It's all about your daily drive situation and overall compromise.

I've ordered a set of Pirelli Series II snows for a set of Rial Salerno wheels with BMW centrepieces. Price was within $50 of Tire Rack without the hassle of dealing with UPS and the ridiculous fees they charge to get the product across the border.

Opted for RFT's as I have wheel and tire insurance. New RFT tire installed when you go in with a flat at the dealership. I've had six flat tires since last February. My wheel and tire policies have paid off.

i just want very good winter tires, not looking to drive the same way I do during the summer lol

Since Ottawa is known for higher volume of snow & very icy condition, I would suggest you are to get dedicated snow/ice tires.

Therefore, your choice would have many (as mentioned earlier) and these are highly recommended in various test reviews in North America & Europe
1) Michelin Xice 3
2) Bridgestone WS70
3) Nokian Hakka R2

Couple of Cons I like to mention on these snow/ice tires, they tend to be a bit more noisy and braking ability on dry & plain wet condition are not as good as the hi performance winter tires, mainly due to the much bigger tread blocks & design of these tires.

There are manuf. mail in rebate incentive happening, starting in October and last thru late December and they can be in the range of $50 - $100 (for set of 4). However, Nokian does not have this and also costs about $150 (set of 4) more than the Michelin & Bridgestone.

My car is also RWD not Xdrive.
will these tires go through heady snow without any problem?
are those 3 all run flat?

Those 3 listed are usually regular tires ... will have to research in the manuf. website to see if they come in RF.

I don't know any good tire stores in Ottawa. But in Toronto, Simply Tires is the best wheels/tires shop in GTA, their price is very good and service is great. Right now, if you buy early, I get another $50 off from their listed price. I just bought a set of winter wheels/tires combo package recently and they beat all other shops I had quoted.

Pirelli sotto is high performance winter. They will have Pirelli Sotto 3 this winter.

They are expensive and do come in RF.

Just personal opinion ... I hate Pirelli.


I checked Nokian Hakka R2 , it does have RF ... but all depends on the size you are looking for.

Simply tire is good. So is tires23. Last season I picked up a set of Pirelli sottozeros for my NC Miata. They were the only reasonable priced tire in the size I was looking for. I wanted a performance winter tire because in the GTA we don't get snow like they do out in Quebec. But this past season was surprising having some really heavy days.
I was very impressed with the sottozeros. They lasted 2 winter seasons. And I do a lot of driving in all sorts of conditions. I think I must've put 35k on those pirellis. They never let me down and they didn't get squishy when it was dry.

I priced out some tires really early, and I think I'll go with another sottozero set.
I'm strictly a Bridgestone guy when it comes to summer tires. And I swear by them for winter as well. But their LM series are all run flats and they cost a lot more than the sottozeros.

Our bmw has inherited a set from my friend who got rid of his early 2000 5 series.
They're Bridgestone ws60 on 17 alloys. Good for this season for sure. Not too sure about another season. We do a lot of driving!

I researched this a lot and went with Michelin X-Ice 3 and OZ Superturismo's in 18", 225/45-18 from Tire Rack for my 2014 F31.

I would have preferred Nokian's but they are more expensive and non-RFT (in that size) like the Michelins with similar reviews/quality.

There are very few options in RFT in that size but Pirelli seems to be the best. Based on my reviews however, they are not as good for full-on snow conditions like we seem to get here in Edmonton a lot of the winter.

I couldn't get a price yet on the new winter packages from BMW but last year they used a generic OEM 18" wheel with the Sottozeros for around $3500 for the F30. Seemed like a lot of $$.

I plan to carry a compressor, plug kit and some sealant as a lot of guys do when running non-RFT tires on BMW's. I will post some pics when I mount them up in October.

I ordered the Pirelli Sottozero II. I've had Pirelli's in the past and thought they were good.

For what its worth BMW offers the Sottozero II in their winter tire packages like canbmw said.

I wanted a RF b/c I have a 15 month old kid and want to take every safety precaution possible for the winter time.

I went with 225/45-18 as well on BMW style 415 (turbine) wheels.
