which 3M double-sided tape to use?
Most people say use this one, part number 6384:
http://www.amazon.com/Automotive-3M-...ble+sided+tape But I cannot find any specs on this tape on the 3M website, in fact I cannot even find this part #. I have been reading that I should be using tape with holding strength of 20lbs to use for applying various body parts like spoilers, splitters, etc. On the 3M site I found part # 5344 but this doesnt seem to be widely available. I also found part # 5952 but the 3M site says its for electronics applications yet I see it on the web for automotive?

Thanks guys. The 3m site is a little confusing. There are so many part #s and applications.

I tired to fit my spoiler today using 3m tape 3M VHB RP25 0.6mm x 12mm.
Firstly I didn't find the tape very sticky. Is this normal? But the main issue I had was the the spoiler isn't flat, it kind of has a lip on it so the tape wasn't thick enough to bridge the gap between the spoiler and the body work. Anyone else had this issue? What should I do just use thicker tape? |

I went to go look at the package the tape came in (still have it) ... funny thing, there was no 3M part number on it at all Its got the red backing on it thats as hard as hell to take off when you are getting ready to apply it - 3M/Scotch Extreme Mounting Tape

Thank you! Would you mind measuring how thick that is? My concern is that it looks a bit thick for what I need it to do. The other 3M tape that is supposed to be for automotive molding is only 0.045" thick but I am not sure if it has as much strength.

Thank you! So I've been doing research and I found another 3m tape that is even stronger than the Extreme Mounting Tape. According to 3M the 5952 tape has a static shear force of 4.4lb/in^2.

Quote:
4.4lbs/in^2 is shear strength which in my case is not really applicable since I am using this tape to apply the M4 side sills. However, I expect there is some direct correlation between shear strength and moment force resistance. Last edited by tboooe; 03-22-2015 at 10:43 AM.. |
