Should police cars be faster?
Some interesting points in here about traffic police covering larger areas and perhaps this leads to more suspected criminals making a run for it, especially if they're in a fast car.
Possibly explains why so many Golf Rs and Audi RS cars get nicked too. https://www.autocar.co.uk/opinion/an...cars-be-faster I always thought the 330d/530d/X5 seemed like a sensible all round choice for police fleets, given the very decent performance but with reasonable running costs.

Harsher sentences, deportation and public humiliation/services would be better.

Can only happen if they're caught though.

A lot of forces do have fast cars on their fleet.
Not really sure more high speed chases is a great idea though. Plus a fast car keeps up with another fast car, still got to stop it though. Technology in every new car where the police can shut the engine down maybe? Sure there would be many problems with that too if I take the time to think it through. |

Problem is in most cases a 2.0tdi insignia will do as crashing over speed bumps will knacker a insignia as much (probably less) than an rs6.
I'd be happy if the police had m5s to patrol in but in reality a 530d wont be outrun by much unless it's on a long stretch of clear road. It would be better if they had MORE cars on patrol and an extra helicopter or 5 rather than rs3 matching panda cars. |

Here in the USA, the California Highway Patrol used some 5.0 Mustangs in the early 'eighties.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Mustang_SSP Today, most CHP officers drive the traditional four door sedans and SUVs. As the old saying goes, you can't outrun a Motorola. And for the ultimate in hot rod cop cars: |

Deterrence is not just the consequence, but also the likelihood of getting caught.

What pisses me off watching the scrotes eventually get caught after high speed chases is that the punishment rarely fits the crime! Longer sentences & stiffer fines might make some of these scumbags thing again but most are out doing it on repeat before you know it!

with the rate they stack their ford diesels into hedges, ditches and lampposts around here you have to be joking.
Mind you we have 1 police man for every 200sq miles at the moment I believe, unless its the weekend then its 1 for 500sq miles.

I think police helicopters are extremely effective in tracking and recording criminals however technology needs to move on so that we can have more available at a much lower cost.

The way things are going there's no point as once they get in to high speed pursuits it becomes to "dangerous" and they have to stop or are not allowed to pursue in the first place as the London scooter crime wave demonstrates.
Until we change to law to protect Police and other law enforcement instead of hanging them out to dry there's no point. I'm at the far end of the Customer service experience for criminals and see similar issues every day in our jails with staff up against it. I'm sure TouringP will have a view.. |

Quote only last night from a firearms officer:
"Our X5s could do with a bit more power. With us and all the gear they are heavy old things." The conversation then turned to more serious matters such as what McDonalds and the like were open in the middle of the night for coffee etc. |

I saw a Focus RS police car near Chatsworth last weekend, that could keep up with most stuff.

Some might think it a tad overkill but I would add death/execution as well to that list
