To the OP, you may want to first try item "t" (second from the bottom). Disables K-band POP only (not Ka band), which may solve your problem and maintain protection from Ka-band POP.

The V1 is a saver and very necessary, even if you have to live with the false positives, its worth it from my point of view.

Laser is very different and has pros and cons from a LEO point of view, its not as widely used in my locale and has some issues with usage.

OTOH, lidar is not used that heavily around here--I guess it's usually too hot for them to roll down a window much of the time :-) When you do see it, it's often from a motorcycle.

It makes for a really good Infiniti detector, though.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll have to consider it. Would you both recommend a V1 over the latest Passport 8500/9500?

Would also love to hear whether anyone has experience installing a laser shifter on their F30.

I _am_ the original poster :-)

Unfortunately, that option is not available on my V1 firmware version. I'm considering sending it for an update--but that means living without it for a few days.

I can't make a fair comparison, because I haven't used the recent Passports. The front and back antennae on the V1 are really nice. OTOH, the Passports probably win on useability. The GPS feature on the 9500(?) sounds nice.

My understanding is that you won't go wrong either way.

I have the Passport 9500ix and I love it. With my regular driving routes I never have any false positives with the GPS feature blocking them all out. I also love the fact that it will tell me where Redlight cameras and Speed cameras are. Works perfectly in my F30 and worked great in my G35 Coupe.

sorry came a bit late to this thread, but a newbie BMW owner .......

how well do these radar detectors work? I have gotten 4 tickets in the last 4 years driving in Texas in a 2004 Honda Accord, so I'm scared what may happen now with a Red 2013 335.....with the Accord, I was never a speed demon, but consistently got pulled over doing 75-80 in a 60 or 65 zone....

I'm thinking, what fun is a fast new BMW (my first) if I always have to drive it the same speed as my prior accord?

talked to a friend who gave me a contact at a local BMW, who offered to custom install Passport 9500 ci for $2000....

questions:

1. is it worth it or should I just spend $500 for a top of the line dash mounted radar
2. how reliable is it? does it drastically reduce or almost eliminate your potential to get pulled over for speeding?
3. do cops get really mad if they pull you over and see you have one? ( i know it's not illegal here in Texas)
4. I do have the active blind spot detection in my bmw - does this make this less functional/valuable?

don't know, maybe it's all just luck - my friend in PA says he consistently goes 90-100 on a 1.5 hour commute each way every day and has gotten 1 ticket in 4 years...without any radar protection....

I may need to send my V1 in....it started giving me false Ka signals of late in the same car it was used in before, and I'm also getting it in my 335i. Tried swapping cords, to no avail.

False detection on BMW

Hi,

Firstly, thanks for the posts, this put me in the right direction.

I have just taken deliver of a 2016 X5 with blind spot detection (BSD) and the V1 I have spent all it's time going off.

I was going to try turning off POP as suggested but when I went into the programming of the unit I noticed that there were bands turned on that are not used in the UK i.e. X and Ka, so I turned them off and the false alarms stopped from the BSD system (which you don't appear to be able to turn off). So I deduced that the BMW BSD must be either running on X or Ka band.

And yes, the V1 is a whole lot quieter with X and Ka turned off.... pity it took me so long to work it out... I have only had the V1 for about 5 years....

This thread's a couple of years old now. How old is your V1? I know they released a firmware update a year or two ago that pretty much eliminated most "noise" from PDCs and BSDs. You can send your V1 in to get it updated.

thanks Versipellis,
I think the unit is about 10 years old.. software version 3.854.
I live in the UK so I assumed that there wasn't anywhere to send it over here.
Will have a check to see if there is a UK option.
Cheers
Ian
