Replacing the front 225 tyres with 235/245 on OEM 403M for better steering response?

Ok, so I got the 403Ms and my wish is to have a square 20" x 8.5" setup with 245/30 tyres. But since itīs nearly impossible to get rid of the OEMs without donating them my plan B is to replace the Bridgestone RFTs and go for Michelin PSS, with 235 or 245 on the front wheels.

Wheel width is 8" with 225-wide tyres and Iīm wondering if Iīm wrong in thinking a wider tyre on said wheel will improve the steering? Will the added bulk make the tyre "softer" and make me loose the benefit of the wider contact-area?

What are your thoughts on this? Any tip is appreciated

You can probably get 5-800$ on Craigslist for your stock wheels.

Hi,

On 8 inch wheels, you can put 215-245 tyres...

I do know they fit but my question is whether the steering would improve or not going wider than 225, or if the added bulk will make it worse.

Hej !

There is maybe an easy answer for your question, since people have been changing wheels to F10-F12 series wheels. Like in this thread:
328i Msport with 20" style 373M on HR sport

So Yes, I think 245 will help you.

PS! I might be looking for a set of 403's - depends on price...

Tjena!

Iīm dead set on a square 20" setup with Michelin PSS 245īs, so the 403 are going away. Iīm also thinking of goin up to a 35-profile instead of the OEM 30 (extra cushioning for the wheels and my familyīs butts ) and according to a lot of other threads, like the one you linked, Iīm thinking/hoping that it would work without issues...

Kommer faktiskt förbi en kille ikväll som ska ha dem, får 23k vilket jag är rätt nöjd med (om du inte vill ge mer haha )

Ok so yesterday I sold them and also ordered the 20" square setup; 20x8.5 with Michelin Pilot Super Sports 245/35 ZR20, XL and non-runflat.

Went with the 35 profile instead of 30 since I read some people in here had zero issues with it. Wanted a little more wheel protection and a tad softer ride. Itīs a 3% difference meaning speedo will show a slower speed, but it will actually be a more accurate value; comparing current speeds with gps-speed it differs around 5-6 km/h (3.125-3.75 mph) at 150 km/h (~94 mph).

With this new setup I will have shaved off almost 16kg or 35 pounds vs OEM 403M with the Bridgestone runflats. Win

What size are the 403s and what is the offset? Whats on there now? They may be telling you that for a couple of reasons. First, if you modify the overall diameter of the tire, then you can throw off the spedometer, slower or faster reading depending on whether the diameter is taller or shorter. The second reason could also be the size for example 19x8-F 19x9-R, the recommended tire size might be 225-F 255-R. From what I recall, the OE specs are that size. Based on Vitoco's original description above, you should be fine going up slightly. The best way to check is go to the tire company's website and look at the specs. It will tell you the OD-overall diameter of the size 225/255 and then compare that to 235/30 or 235/35 and then 265/30 or 265/35. Dont just focus on width, but OD also. Everyone wants a wider tire but realize that changing the OD will throw off the spedo. If you increase by one size from a 225-35 to a 235-35 fronts and from 255-35 to 265-35, the OD is minimal and the affect on the spedo will also be very little. Long explanation but research a little. Everyone here has done some trials with various sizes and it boils down to personal preference within the safe zone.

Vitoco, please post pics of your car with the new squared setup. I am considering doing the same now vs my staggered and would like to see how everything came out. Post wheel sizes, offsets and tire sizes so everyone can see and get an idea of what you did.

Thanks and I am sure it looks great.
