Yeah! I find it annoying too. Especially when you have to turn it off immediately. Isn't it bad for the ac compressor to turn it off shortly after it has been turned on?

I've read that normally you can just leave the system in auto mode with AC on, all year around.

Is this true? I don't think the manual was very clear on this matter.

Also, should I just leave everything in auto most of the time? (Auto climate control, AC on, Auto fresh air/recirc)

Yes, I think you're right, you can keep the system on AUTO w/ A/C on. I
believe that setting acts as an air filtration system.

My personal preference in the winter time is to keep the temp on AUTO but A/C off,

Seems to work out fine, I switch the A/C to on in the summer with AUTO on. So, basically the reverse.

Leave the a/c "on" in the winter. It'll act as a de-humidfier and keep ya from fogging. You're not gonna burn much fuel by leaving it on.

Mine stays off when I turn it off and doesn't revert back to on. Am I in the minority here?

My A/C stays off too.

But, if you turn the fan completely off, restarting the car will turn the fan back on.

I leave my system on Auto with A/C off and it never comes back on unless I start changing settings.

My AC comes on if I select auto. Not if I start the car.

Why would you wanna turn the A/C off? Mine is constantly on, on the exact same setting all year around -> 22 C. It makes no difference if itīs way below freezing (like now at -20 C) or real hot summer temps. Always have fresh air inside and I get fresh air thus no stanky smells develop (from moisture).

it also means that the gas is circualted around the system , I was always under impression you need to use teh a/c at least once a week. If you don't, the gas can start to leak out and if it gets really bad, can damage your compressor causing you a large bill.
Best to leav it on all year. You set the temperature you want and the system looks after ecerthing else. It will als ensure the car doesn't steam up inside when its say raining outside.
I simply can't think of a reason to turn it off.

The only reason one would want to turn it off is to save a few cents on fuel. But thatīs just fooling yourself as keeping it off can eventually create other, more costly, problems. So donīt be cheap, be smart.

Doesn't this car have a disengaging alternator. So if the ac is off, there is significantly less strain on the engine during winter months?

I didn't think the alternatr disengaged when the temp was low as with the ASS - linked all together...

Modern cars are designed to have the AC on all the time now really. Gone are the days of hefty fuel consumption increase and decreased power when pulling away and using AC

Plus the A/C compressor is of the variable displacement/output type so much lower power demands in cooler temperatures, but all the benefits of FULL Climate Control in the car.

As already said "think smart" and keep the CC in optimum condition, no discomfort (or smells) in the car.

HighlandPete

BTW, I assume some of the posters mean they switch off the A/C function, and are not meaning they switch off the whole HVAC system, meaning no air changing in the car.

The AC system is separate from the air filtration system right? What I means is turning the AC on or off should not affect the quality of air filtration.

Compared to my old econobox, I do notice much improved air quality, since I'm driving mostly with all windows closed while it is winter time. I have put the moonroof in tilt mode once in a while, but would immediately notice outside smells (like diesel smells from big rigs) in the cabin, leading me to immediately close the moonroof again.

Never noticed that with my old car, so I am wondering if the BMW is doing a good job filtering the air, so as soon as I crack open the moonroof, the outside smells become that much more noticeable.

I don't have a F30 but I have a E90. My car has 200,000 KMS on it now and I never turn off the A/C compressor. It cools me down in the summer time and keeps my windows from fogging up in the winter time. It's still running strong. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
