Also check for country specific holidays. Ascension Day is May 9 (Thursday). Most Europeans will take the Friday to make a 4 day weekend. Hotels and restaurants will fill up and the roads will be packed.

I received one in the mail about a month after we got home...

When you are picking up the car at the Welt they'll ask where you're planning to travel. Some vignettes you buy on your own, but some things they can handle for you. We went to Stuttgart, so they gave us an emissions registration sticker that we otherwise wouldn't have needed.
