I agree. While it appears to be a good idea (you get your car back) I wouldn't knowingly sign such paperwork. I also wouldn't want to ever deal with a dealership who used such trickery on BMW because that would suggest to me that they would also use trickery to get around properly meeting my needs.

Never had an oil issue but did have secondary plates in a 4 barrel that did not open. vacuum operated end carbs on a 3X2 setup with no vacuum hose to a vacuum source & a car that had missing engine mount bolts on one side. Cars are much better now with robots building them but screw-ups still happen.

We did. I wasn't quite sure at the time why there were two sets of paperwork. I paused for a second and was trying to figure it out but she just wanted to get the car and go. I didn't figure out what was going on until a little while later.

If you run through the oil level check procedure in iDrive, it actually does measure the amount of oil in the engine. It's under vehicle status, and you have to initiate it while parked with the engine running at nominal temperature. I do this once a month - takes about a minute or two, and the idle goes up a few hundred rpm while it's measuring. Not as good as a dipstick, but it works. There is also a warning light if oil pressure drops below minimum as well as one for oil level.

"There is also a warning light if oil pressure drops below minimum as well as one for oil level." I always thought our cars have a 'low oil pressure' warning, but today I looked in the user manual and found no reference to it. Has anybody any knowledge about it? The combination of: - no dipstick - no oil pressure warning light - no automatic oil level check unless more than 30 minutes non-stop driving - a one minute long, manual oil check procedure requiring the car to stop with engine on, makes me unconfortable: it means that the risk of an undetected lack of oil and engine damage may be high -- but we don't read about it here, so in real life it must be a rare event! |

I think scoping the engine at the very least is in order. You might contact BMW NA on this one too to get them involved so that they can help you get the car situated. I would ask them to go through the vehicle to make sure it is up to par and do not just idly trust that it will last. The last thing you would want really is to have it blow up on you 1000 miles outside of warranty because no one looked to see the scoring on the piston walls. If there is there were metal shavings in the oil and that can be tested if you have the oil tested. Oil testing is popular on the z4 forum.

Theyve been doing the sensor thing for years. No mods that ive hear dof so far. I also do not like the fact that you cannot manually double check what the computer is telling you. especially since it take like 5 minutes to get the vehicle up to temperature for them to even work.
