Painting..advise

Stripped wallpaper. Plasterboard is showing. Does this need just painting over with matt emulsion.

Also the windowsill has dog chew damage. What's the best way to approach painting over this.

Regarding the plasterboard.....just paint it with an extra coat on the 'bare bits' to fill the lack of paper. It looks like bare Plasterboard, so you really should 'seal' it first. Best thing is watered down emulsion. Around 80% paint mixed with 20% water, or just buy a tub of really cheap emulsion and use that first as cheapo paint is just watered-down paint!

If there is dried wallpaper paste residue, use diluted sugar soap but only get it damp not soaking wet as it will make it more of a job.

The window cill (or bottom of the frame) looks like it is MDF from the picture. If so seal it with some MDF sealer then scrape on a bit of wood filler. Sand back gently then it can be painted. If you don't seal MDF the paint just soaks in and expands the MDF.
If it is wood, then as above without the sealer.

Sugar soap on the radiator too, it will clean most things......gently.

Have to ask the question....how the hell did a dog chew THAT, THERE?

Fantastic thank you. Sugar soap never used it but will get some today. Wouldn't have thought of using it before painting, there is smooth wallpaper adhesive residue visible when viewed from an angle. The sill is mdf. This cheeky cavalier jumps and sits on it and sometimes chews. She's cheeky and doesn't listen, a sweetheart so can't punish her either

That makes you a lucky man. If you really want a project I have about 6 rooms that could quite happily be decorated... but I'll wait and get the professionals in later in the year.

Pop over to Ralston , i have a house that needs painted externally and if you are really - really bored you can do the garage whilst you are here.

For a windowsill I would put any white putty, sand it down then prime whole windowsill and paint all over with emulsion paint.
For plasterboard need a primer before painting, can use PVA glue diluted with water.
I personally dislike people inside my house no matter if its a decorator, plumber or electrician, so perfectly valid plan for DIY!

Question for you and Pond
Will painting primer on to the wall where there is wallpaper residue work. The residue is very thin/smooth no lumpiness etc.

You don't need PVA on an old plasterboard wall. PVA is just glue (Poly Vinyl Acetate) which acts as a barrier to paper absorbing water-based paints.

Who knew decorating could be so scientific, eh?

Yes. it will work, but may need a coat or two more paint to cover it nicely. Wallpaper paste is water-based so won't be a major problem.

Don't over-think it. It is just sploshing coloured water on walls TBH. The water evaporates and the colour is left. One tip I would strongly recommend, though, is using 'Frog tape' for any masking. It is more expensive than any other masking tape but it is extremely good. No bleeding of paint under it, unlike any other masking tape.

Regards wall, is this a plasterboard or plaster? Hard to tell on photo, fresh plaster or plaster board needs sealing, always used Leyland trade matt watered down, is pourse and ideal as a seal coats x2 and is white white. If you don't seal new or bare plaster it will just sucks water out of paint and will start to peal. With the leyland stuff, water 2L-3L per 10L paint works best. You have small patches so I would just use any white matt paint.

Window sills I would use wood filler first, build up in section so has time to dry, anything over 2-3mm then sand it down to mach rest of curve. If you just want paint it, looks to be mdf window sill I would use mdf primer as mdf board again will suck normal wood primer in, and will require 3-4 coats before you actually see build up of paint.

If you asked how I know

From my little decorating experience roughness after painting is 90% the same as before painting i.e. if there are any cavities, they will remain after painting. As for sticking a primer on residue this should work.

Agree, and on this point - looking at the peeled paint on the plasterboard; i would lightly sand that down to make sure the paint edges are 'feathered' or blended as much as possible.

If you were to paint straight over it, you will see some slight ridges.

So it ended well
Pond wow...sugar soap works wonders. I've got it in a sprayer bottle and whole of downstairs walls and skirting boards and just about everything else in the house including radiators cooker hoods sofas etc all sparkling now all for £3 and there is still quarter bottle of that 700ml concentrate left.

The paint job went well.Needed a few coats over the bare Plasterboard with brush to get level then one coat over the walls with roller all in £18 for matt paint and £15 for the paint roller and a brush.
Prep and clean was hardwork. Painting was a doddle. The washing machine got rid of the paint from my pyjamas which I was pleased with too.
