Yeah the strange thing is my driver's side is great, no noise at all.
Passenger side is utterly useless. In crosswinds its brutal. It'll be going into the stealership to get looked at. |

There may be hope?
I don't know what my dealership did, but they definitely improved the wind noise for me. Mine was never as bad as the ones described in here, but they still managed to improve it. I would say it is comparable to how quiet a 5 series is, and I am probably one of the pickiest in detecting abnormal noise. Mine used to have a swooshing sound near the B-Pillar, but now even at 120km/h (aka 70mph) it's barely audible and I have to literally stick my ear to the pillar and force myself to hear something, which is probably just road noise. I am going to try and find out what they have done exactly and share with you guys if possible next time I visit them. dL |

I don't have a 3, though someone on this forum may have recommended the following - use car detailer blue tape and cover some of the seams in the area affected, with some trial and error you may be able to tell if door-seal/weather stripping is the cause.
On a past car, a metal heat shield under the car just aft of the front bulk-head ( right side ) would sometime get bent downward into the airflow and the sound would emanate from the passenger door area. |

Have there been any complaints with how windy the F30 is with the windows down? In a typical car you can drive 30-40 even 50 with pretty minimal wind coming in, but this car man, by the time I hit 20 its like a cat 4 hurricane in there. And it's constant, bombardment of the face. It's almost like pointless to put the windows down on anything but side roads. Is this related to the windows up whirling noise issue, which I do have a little bit of? It's not crazy annoying in my car but I have heard it before.
I went through as many of these pages as I could before going nuts to search for the answer but everybody seems to be discussing windows up only. |

The two things are connected. Design flaw -> high turbulence -> super loud w/ windows down -> still loud w/ windows up.

I think after a year of observation, I think I might know why F30's have wind noise characteristics as part of the design.
It has to do with the rubber door seal that touches the shadow trim line. As you know, the shadow trim line is made of plastic, and plastic is not as great of an insulator as the metal on the car body. Since our rubber door seal only touches the shadow trim line, it gives an opportunity for wind intrusion to occur near the plastic piece all around the doors. Compare this to other makes such as Mercedes or even the 5 series (F10) where the door seal actually touches the metal body panel, their cars have far less wind noise. In addition, cars like the 5 series (F10) have a really deep inlet between the door seal and the inner rubber seal which further separates the interior cabin from any potential wind noise. Compared that to ours, you will notice the gap between the shadow trim line and our inner rubber seal is quite little, maybe only a few centimetres apart. The only way to improve wind noise is to ensure that the rubber door seal actually grips on to your shadow trim line as tightly as possible. Some door seals may not have installed properly, leaving potential gap for wind noise to intrude. I do know that after replacing all 4 door seals (due to creaking noises), the wind noise have drastically reduced. But it will never be silent. It's a design problem. Let me know if you guys have other insights into this. dL |

I recently did the ASS update at the dealer and they had to pretty much reprogram the whole car including the stereo. This took them all day. In the notes it indicates that they had to reprogram the window regulators????
Since this update I believe that my cabin noise has increased dramatically. It was so noticeable, I felt it as I was driving from the dealer's parking lot. I wonder if there is some setting with the window regulators that does not close them fully. Even a slight gap may create these noises because it certainly feels as if the window is not fully closed. Wonder if anybody has noticed increase in cabin noise after the ASS or other ECU update? |

From memory, one of the updates to the F30 involves the removal (?) of some bungs to allow better water drainage. Is it possible that this is now allowing noise into the cabin?
I'd take the car straight back to them and complain. |

Yes with the removal of the bung, your car now has a bunghole.

One thing I have learned in the past year of so, is that in order to hear the noise, you have to be on a smooth road, or I should say in order for the wind noise to be noticeable, you have to be on a good surface. The road noise can mask the wind noise. I have also noticed that the outside wind can make a difference when you going against/with the wind.

I want to add something to the topic, I tried to insulate the cabin by putting material in front wings from the engine compartment, covering that hole in the engine bay (photo attached), putting insulation near door seals and still very noisy car inside. Damn I even took off the plastic that is in the wheelarch and put insulation on it (other people were affraid to do that not to damage the screws/rivets - but I found them on ebay)
I will upload more photos soon. I have factory installed insulation that you can see in front wings when you open front door so no need there. Im clueless what to do next, the noise seems to be strong from the wheels in mine so I will be changing front tyres soon to check (rears are wider and more expensive) My car is 320d estate msport

There's nothing to be done. Read all 3/4/4GC/M3/M4 reviews and you'll see that they have one common complaint: tire (and sometimes wind) noise. The car is built that way. It's as noisy as an Elantra or a Civic. Enjoy it
