Question Lease transfer question (California license plates)

I'm in California and am transferring a lease to another member who's also in California.

What do I do with the license plates? Does it go with the car or do I remove and surrender to DMV? BMW says to remove the plates before turning the car over, but as far as I know, plates are supposed to stay with the car in Cali.

Anyone know from experience? Thanks.

As far as I remember the plates stay on the car in CA, especially in a private party transfer. The only exception is personalized plates which you own (unless you release them and surrender with DMV).

It has been a few years since I bought a used car in CA, but I don't recall ever seeing older cars driving around with temp plates, which you know, how would you even buy a car? If the owner takes the plates off and you can't register the car without the title signed off......you'd get pulled over on your way to the DMV.....LOL

Best bet is to check with your local DMV.

I have no idea why BMW is telling you that. In CA the plates always stay with the car, except for personalized plates.

Yes, the plates stay with the car unless personalized. I have done the lease transfer a couple of times over the years in CA.

Ask DMV, not BMW. I think it should work the same as selling your car, license plates go with the car.

Leave the plates on but fill up a DMV release of liability and transfer form.
