I remember even years ago on car w/ a square setup from the factory (e39 528i rwd, 15" wheels) it was recommended from BMW not to rotate the tires. Reason being along the lines each corner wearing in a specific manner/pattern and when you put that tire on a different corner, it upsets the balance of the vehicle until it wears in to that new corner. Take it w/ a grain of salt I guess.

I use 235/45r18 Blizzaks on my 18x8/8.5 staggered factory wheels. No rubbing issues at all last year on stock m-sport suspension.

Summer setup is 18x9 Apex Arc-8s with 255/40 Michelin Super Sports.

I would go the smallest possible diameter with the skinniest possible tire for the winter setup. And square.
You gain zero advantage going staggered for winter, except spend more for tires. You absolutely get no advantage by going with a wide tire in the snow.

I have 17's on mine. I think they're square. I did whatever Discount Tire said.

Little late to the party here but I bought a set of Pirelli Sottozero Serie II RF for my 435i xdrive with the M-Sport package and staggered factory setup.

2-225/45R18
2-255/40R18

Haven't put them on yet so can't attest to the performance, cost to switch, or wheel damage, but plan to put them on in late October.

I have a rwd 335 with the staggered setup and last winter ran pirelli sottozero serie ii tires on it, same size as the summer tires it came with now.
No issues, no problems, the reason I picked those was I have the bmw tire and wheel Warranty and wanted something that would Still be covered since they are tires that bmw does offer.
My indie mechanic installed them.
Ran a whole season with no problems. (except the notorious wheel shake that many of us have had, but that's on summer tires too)
Grip is amazing, comfort is not as comfy as I would like but they are run flats so can't get around it.
You won't be disappointed.
Got them from tire rack.

Looking at winter tires myself. Just bought a 2015 435i Gran Coupe M-Sport. I'd like to use my Style 287 wheels from my 2011 335d which are 18x8 and 18x8.5. Would these work on my 435i Gran Coupe M-Sport? Which tire sizes would I use? 225/45/18 and 225/40/18?

Staggered wheels are ok.

But you need matchning front and rear tire diameters.
