My M Sport on the track + BMW CCA HPDE 5/3/2013

I attended the So Cal Chapter of BMW CCA high performance driving event at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. There was only one other F30 there besides mine and it just happened to be Estoril blue!

I've been to a few tracks in my life but never to a super speedway....it was incredible! Driving on part of the oval was surreal at first and a blast each session.

There were many beautiful BMW's there of course but there were also Porsche's, Vettes, full blown race cars and even a Tesla Model S!

Timing is not allowed at this event but with an instructors help I got smoother and quicker each session. When you're not on the track you are in class going over lines, braking, traffic or anything else you want to talk about.

I really had fun and look forward to the next one.

There were four run groups:
A+ Highly experienced and or active racers
B Very experienced
C Some experience
D Noobs

He was in B group so I never saw him run, but since he was in B I'm sure he was fast!

I was in D group. I should have run C group. Next time....

um I don't know...seems like there were a lot of ppl out there in groups that they didn't belong in (and its probably like that in every group except in A+). Unless I am seriously over exaggerating the amount of skill one would need to be in a certain group. A+ group you know what you are getting. I was in C and was literally lapping ppl twice in one session and starting last and getting to the front and I am by no means a very experienced driver. I will go to B next time (got recommended to run B by the instructor and was let out alone on the last session) but I think at CCA events, the levels are lower compared to running with other organizations. I asked my instructor while driving what is the difference between me and ppl in B? Nothing. I know some ppl are in the higher groups because they have been to this track a bunch of times, but that doesn't mean anything if you are a slow learner lol.

Alpine - I think you could even get into B perhaps. Lot of guys out in C group that were not as good as you IMO.

So, typically how these things work, is that the groups outside of A+ needs to be relatively equal in size. What happened in this event was we had predominantly B sign-ups and D sign-ups, the end result was some Bs were moved down to make room, and some Ds were moved up to make room, making C probably one of the wildest, most wide ranging in skill-set we've had in a long time. If there were no shuffling, I'd guess we'd have nearly 20 Bs, and maybe 12 Cs.

Occasionally we get a weird mix like this. Fortunately, as people stick with our program more, the ratios will even itself out.

Here's one video I captured of the instructor's session:

Sorry for the shaki-ness, it's captured on an iPhone mounted on the rear bulkhead with a frankenstein mount.

Yeah that crazy home made ghetto gopro and mic setup worked pretty well. Who knew PVC pipes and a windshield made from a dog toy (fox's tail cut and sewn) would make a great video LOL.

I was pretty amazed at the sound itself from the stock exhaust. I thought that honestly the mic towards the engine would have sounded better but it came out pretty good. Not bad for a first time video editing - i learned the hard way and had to redo it a couple of times.

I hope that dude in the GT3 sees this video somewhere. He was sort of a braggart in the classroom and the whole time I was thinking, really? because I remember I lapped you TWICE in one of the sessions. haha. Now let me go post this on the porsche boards.

You need to buy a gopro and the mic i use. I can make the windscreen for you and the headrest mount although they are pretty easy to make. Do you have a rear seat pass through? or do they fold down?

I have an OLD GoPro but I'll get a new HD one. My seats fold. Your setup is perfect...lets do it! You have to take off June 7th! Make it happen!

Great pictures. Looks like fun. What's the top speed on the front straight?

Thanks, it was a great day for sure. pkim1079 hit 135+ in his M3. I saw 125. The car is capable of more but that was fast enough for me on the banking. It's a little intimidating, not like a flat straight at all. I can't wait to try it again now that I'm a little familiar with it.

Me too. Dont forget my first session 2nd lap where i was determined to hit 150 while speedo gazing to confirm and then realized oh shit theres the wall. Lol. Dont do that. Look well left and you can go faster. I knew in class when the gt3 dude said i was going 120 (more like 100) and felt like i was going towards the wall - its cause he was staring at it.

After my speedo fixation, i took it 135mph entering, lifting, coasting then exiting around 120.
