F30 Windshield Replacement :o
Typical story, behind a truck and a huge rock hit my windshield going 80mph. Now i have a crack roughly 8" long.....
I just got quoted by the dealer for roughly $1150 for parts and labor. Apparently they have to replace a sensor for the auto wipers and also molding. If i were to go to a 3rd party windshield company would it OEM? I have a $500 deductible but would prefer not to go that route. Thanks in advance. |

On my prior Lexus is350 I had to replace a windshield and didnt have the ability to use my insurance coverage through geico. My deductible was $500 and the safelite cost was $400. I asked geico if I went oem from Lexus for $1,000 would geico pay the $500 above my deductible and they said no. I went with safelite and the glass was supposedly "oem equivalent." The glass didn't have the Toyota stamp and was distorted in the last few inches as the glass met the A pillar. I would say that safelite or similar is a perfect choice for 95% of car owners. I just happen to be someone that will do it through a dealer next time around.

Glass industry is very funny with semantics - ask for "OE", not "OEM". OE=factory BMW, OEM=aftermarket. If you get aftermarket glass, they'll try to reuse the old sensors, windshield mounts, etc. and I can almost guarantee the rain sensor will never work right again.
As an aside, that quote actually sounds quite light for factory OE glass. I had the windshield on our E61 done last year and it was over $2,200. |

If I understand correctly, you want to use (Genuine BMW) parts but you're looking to save on labor cost? Be careful if you decide to use aftermarket considering how many different windshields there are for your car based on options your car is equipped with. There are so many configurations and here is a list of some of the options that dictate which windshield fits your car:
Windshield, green, rain/light/fog Green windshield, grey schade band Windshield, green, rain sensor / HUD Windshield with grey wedge Interior/outside mirror with auto dip Interior mirror with automatic-dip Rain sensor Automatic air conditioning Lane departure warning Lane-change warning High-beam assistant Driving Assistant Head-up display SPEED LIMIT INFO For example, for a 2014 335i (production 03/2014 USA spec), take a look at what's listed: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=51_8484 You can find the exact one for your car if you enter your VIN here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select For pricing, enter the part numbers here: http://www.getbmwparts.com/parts/ind...&siteid=214672 Sorry about your windshield and too bad you don't free windshield replacement insurance

I've gone through 2 windshield replacements. First time technically went with non OEM (supplier to BMW but not "BMW") due to delay issues in supply. 2nd time with OEM. Not much of a difference and had no issues with rain sensor etc. Price was fairly similar between both. If it's cheap there is a reason.
I wouldn't go with a complete third party (I.e non OEM supplier) |

As far as labor goes, even if you go through the dealer to have it replaced with BMW parts, they will likely call in an outside service to do the replacement. Not many dealerships have their own in-house glass employee.
I had the windshield replaced on my first BMW at a fairly large dealer and although they sourced the part, someone else came in to install it. I had no deductible, but a max limit on my glass insurance, so I told Met Life I would pay the difference. When they were billed, they paid the whole thing.

Had to replace mine on my 320i
OEM cost was going to be about $1300 Safelite cost for an aftermarket Plinkton was $600. Rain sensor works just as poorly as it did with the OEM windshield.

Decided not to take it to the dealer because Geico would not cover 100%. The dealer likely outsource to local shops anyways.
I would have to pay out of pocket and claim for reimbursement. Geico said they disagree with the dealership labor charge they only allows $40/hr.... Found a local shop by reviews and Geico approved to use OE glass. Local Safelites have mixed reviews. Anyone had experience with these guys? Dropping my car off to them tomorrow. https://www.yelp.com/biz/2-hour-auto...nting-brooklyn

Quick update.
Dropped off the car to 2 Hour Auto Glass this morning and picked it up in the afternoon. They ordered OEM windshield from BMW, Pilkington with BMW logo on it. Overall looks like a clean and nice job. Rain sensor is working well with a quick test. Hope there won't be any leaks or issues in the long term. Best overall $0 out of pocket. Well I tipped them $20.

I used Safelite about 6 months ago, used the original sensor on the car. Had some trouble with the rain sensor afterwards. Noticed an air bubble inside the sensor, called Safelite back and they came and fixed it, no issues since then. Well worth the savings over BMW glass
