Thumbs up BMW 340i MPPSK fitted today (with video)

So today I had the MPPSK fitted to my 340i. I’ll write a bit below, but for anyone wanting a quick summary, then here it is.

IT’S F****** AWESOME!!!!

I jumped on the excellent deal brokered by Six cylinder Virgin through Coopers BMW Reading. The guy I dealt with there, Aran, was absolutely superb and a true enthusiast. And you can’t argue at just under £2k for the full MPPSK kit with carbon tips! The deal is still on, so if anyone wants to get the kit fitted - and I can assure you it really completes the x40i - then let me know and I will happily pass on his contact details.

So anyway, what of the kit? Well fitting took just over 2 hours, so nice and easy there. While it was being fitted I has a listen to Cooper’s demo 440i with MPPSK. From the outside and in Comfort Mode it was like the standard exhaust in Sport Mode, maybe 10% louder, but with a different deeper tone. Sounded great. Then Aran switched to Sport mode and….MY GOD!!!!! was it louder. And I mean MUCH louder. It was brilliant!!!

Anyway so on the drive home and now with MPPSK fitted, I started out in comfort mode. I would say it’s like the regular exhaust in Sport mode, but maybe with a little bit more noise. Certainly it has a different tone, slightly deeper. On the Motorway there’s no drone and on a constant throttle it’s quiet as a mouse, only being heard under acceleration. In fact it’s very reminiscent of the BMW 6 cylinder cars of old, with that lovely turbine smoothness humming away. It sounds great and is not intrusive at all, but does also give you some sound (which is lacking in the standard exhaust in Comfort Mode).

Then switch to Sport and, well, the difference is massive! If the difference between Comfort and Sport with the regular exhaust is around 15-20%, then with MPPSK it’s 100%. At least. You will never ever mistake which mode you’re in! On the motorway it does drone and you wouldn’t want to be in Sport while cruising. But in more enthusiastic use it’s just brilliant. And loud. Very loud. It burbles away on lift off, burbles and pops on downchanges and then, given a lift off after a bit of WOT, there’s full-blown gun fire from the back. I have no doubt that if I achieved this in town, people would be diving for cover thinking they were part of a drive-by shooting. It’s genuinely laugh-out-loud hilarious!

And the power? It definitely feels quicker, with significantly more mid-range. However without a vBox it’s hard to say. What I will say though, and I know this echoes Daftasabrush comments, but the MPPSK really completes the x40i cars. I originally thought that the standard car did the Jekyll and Hyde role well, but that was childs play compared to MPPSK. It’s just fantastic and I think it should be law that all x40i owners have it.

Anyway here’s a couple of pics, plus a video I put together to show the differences between standard exhaust and MPPSK. What I will say is that the video really doesn’t give you any idea of just how much louder MPPSK is in Sport Mode.

Finally this is probably the best video I’ve found to highlight the MPPSK Comfort vs Sport Mode sound differences.

What is the normal price for the kit?

and what damage is done to insurance as the 10% increase on my 330d cost me £180 and most insurance companies will not touch anything over 10% increase in power without ££££'s

I have completed most of my mods without the wife finding out. You have no chance with this one!

I was quoted £3,220 from my supplying dealer (inc fitting).

I'm with LV and it added £75 to the insurance premium.

When I say drive-by style gun fire, this is what I mean (although there's a lot of sound reflection in this vid)

Is the power increase about 10%?

Are you planning on getting the car on a dyno anytime soon?

Awesome.

Is Mrs Grant_7 hard of hearing, or do you have some explaining to do?

Yes I'm not sure how I will get it past the Mrs...

She's not heard it yet, but I did slip in the old "Oh, I hit 1200 miles on the way home from work today and, now that it's run-in, it's got much louder" comment. Let's hope my ruse works!

As if by magic, the car was transformed once I hit the magical 1,200 miles.

Don't take her near a DeLorean, as you know what'll happen at 88 mph.

Sounds great... I'm loving mine. Really completes the car. Love the fact you can switch it on and off. I run the comfort sound in sport and keep the full on noise for sport +.....

You need the rear diffuser now

Sounds great, bit like the ACS with the Xdrives, that must surely be a must have for the x40i girls.

So best you all get making excuses or get sneaky with it and get one sorted.
