In 20+ years of owning BMWs, I never knew...

that squeaks and rattles are covered by a 12 month warranty.

Yes, during my talk with the service advisor, after I told her about a soft, intermittent squeak from the exterior of the driver's door, bottom window trim, I was advised that such a 'fault' had its warranty expire in October 2013, 1 year after I bought the car.

She told me that the techs would take a look, but I may be charged for any repairs.

Anyone else know about this 'secret' warranty?

I'm probably one of few who read all the manuals and warranty information so yes I knew about the 12 months warranty on rattles.

Well hows this for size... I have noticed that there is dust and minute lint collecting in between the speedo and the perspex covering, I have no idea how it got it there and is building up. There interior is dust free and cleaned regular.. now THIS best be covered by some sort of warranty

You had better get it looked at ASAP then.

I had been advised the service department attended to the trim with some lubricating spray without charge. I will see or rather, hear how it goes over the next few weeks. If they would not have done anything, I would have challenged BMW.

it's all about fair and reasonable expectations.

That might be entirely true for their "express warranty". However, consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law are different - I would hope that for a 75k+ car you could expect a little more

That being said - Car manufacturers/dealers seem to be expert at avoiding these obligations...

Oh, I agree and told the service advisor exactly that!! They attended to the issue without any more excuses. Only time will tell if the lube worked.
Often, it's quicker in terms of time & money to attend to the issue thus ensuring you have strengthened customer loyalty because you do attend to the 'little' issue, instead of wasting the time explaining why it's not really covered by their warranty.

At my first service I complained about the squeaks around the doors without any hesitation they applied teflon tape around all the door frames. No more squeaks for 4 months now. Would have been in first 12 months of ownership though.

I just had rattles in the CID screen fixed under warranty at 24 months old, but I was advised that it was basically a gesture of goodwill.
