okay okay I know there's a perfectly sane explanation for my title description... so has anyone else noticed that when the car just sits there competely off it makes weird noises... sounds like a muffled mechanical sound or if I walk close it and around the car it starts making some intermittent mechanical sound almost like its try to anticipate what I'm gonna do -- reminds me of a scene from transformers...

It sounds more like something is priming. Maybe fuel tank pressurization?

Happens on my Z4 almost all the time. After I turn the car off and I go outside and walk around the car, I can hear some clicking and some mechanical workings going on inside the car.

You could make a rather entertaining game out of this. Called "Name that sound" make a short clip of the sound. and then have people guess. Whomever wins gets a gold star, and the opportunity to place their own sound. Oh what fun it will be.

regarding the title, I'd suggest Prilosec OTC (don't bother w/ the generic though)

Have you tried using tums or pepto?

I can only speak from my GTi experience but when the door is open the car primes the fuel pump so that could be it.

I would think that the mechanical sounds would have to do with various pressure reliefs. With a twin scroll turbo, direct injection, high pressure fuel pump, etc. I would think that after the engine is off a little while that the various pressures would be released to protect the component.

My 330d has a mechanical orchestra when the engine is off. My old 520d could moan and whine too! I was cleaning my E90 today actually and it just went "ugggghhhhhhhhh."
I just stopped dusting, stared along the dashboard, laughed, and continued! All norm, no worries!
Quite cool actually, especially in the Transformers way!

Same here with my 330d. Once unlocked (before and after driving) the car is clicking, whirling and groaning, until it is finally locked and goes into sleep mode.

Do you have Comfort Access? My car makes weird noises when I am close, to anticipate opening the trunk or door.

It's just the affect I have! No Comfort Access either! It's quite amusing just listening to it. It's still very much alive and conscious even after its turned off!

Quite normal

Many things can run when you have "switched "off" the car, including

Fuel pump priming
Electric waterpump (cools turbos after engine was run)
Various electric components

I can't quite tell if mine would be a Decepticon or an Autobot
