Question Let's talk M2 N55

Where does it get the extra horsepower. Modified N55 internals? Different turbo? Different engine mapping? It's not just an exhaust and certainly not from the intake.

Educate me.

Then maybe we can talk about parts that we might be able to pillage from the M2.

If it is a 55 engine, wouldn't it be like an S55 ?

(only saw it's pwr rating, not engine type for the M2)

Looking at some data of the two, it sounds like it could be. I found this bit a little interesting about recommended octane.

"Rated output: BMW recommends the use of super unleaded 95 RON fuel. Unleaded RON 91 fuel or higher with a maximum ethanol limit of 10 per cent (E10) is also permitted. The performance and fuel consumption rates listed are based on the use of RON 98 fuel."

EVo said it was our N55 with some updates and the big (stated above) addition is the twin scroll turbo. Comes to my question. Is our turbo single scroll or twin?

The internals are slightly different, i believe it has pistons and bearings out of an S55. I'm assuming allowing for slightly more boost with no negative affects.

Correct. M2 will probably just use the same as 235i turbo.

That remains to be seen. But if it does it would be nice to retrofit on our cars

This. It stole some internals from the S55, but is still a single turbo.

Better internals, more aggressive tuning.
That being said, the current N55 can make this kind of power with little to no effort, BMW detune their engines so they can release a million models

•Closed-deck engine (water jacket surrounding the cylinders is sealed at the top, allowing for high cylinder pressures

straight from the spec list on the M2 forum

Not sure why it's designated a N55 if the block is different. Odd.

I browsed the M2 tech training PDF and they don't mention anything about closed deck block, just pistons, bearings and oiling system upgrades. I do see a bullet on a forum post, but I would consider it suspect since it's just "reporting" and not a BMW publication.
