Sooty Exhaust
I've had my 2014 328I for just over a year now.
I noticed on some longer drives (over 200 miles) that the exhaust pipe is always sooty. It's enough that it leaves a mark on my finger when I run it along the pipe exit. My past experiences with all my cars is that the pipe would be a light gray without any carbon soot. Is this normal for this car. Is it a characteristic of the fuel system that doesn't allow it to 'lean' out on the highway? Thanks in advanced. |

So sooty that crap splats on my bumper after just two days of driving. BMW told me with the moisture these motors have, its normal.

Nope, never sooty, just gets gray.
It might have something to do with it but since first fill up - I have only run premium (98 octane) gas - I drive it till it reaches operating temperature 9 times out of 10, can sometimes take an extra lap around the block just for the sake of it - I am not shy on the gas when opportunity comes (and itīs at operating temp) I believe some of these factors, or the combination, makes the difference. I really think that if you often do short drives, seldomly rev it out, you get alot of condensation that captures the exhaust particles and then on occasion when you actually do push a little it splutters out. My theory.

Its normal. Seems a common issue with modern turbos. Go look at the ass end of a GT-R some time.
