I have a VSS rack on order and I'm being told from my dealer another 4 weeks since it is on backorder. If it's more than 7 like yourself, I have huge problems with that because my car is disassembled at the dealer! I'm in a loaner, but I am certainly not pleased about this. This better fix the problem. Ugh. Guess I have to be patient.

The re-programming went off without a hitch.. although I did have to return the next morning as the steering wheel was completely off centre. I wont hold my breath just yet as my original steering issue never turned up until about 2,000k where abouts are you getting your vehicle fixed? Matt

If your dealer is updating using the 3/2013 update there's been issues programming cars in the US so I suspect its the same issue. My dealer tells me they've lost a couple cars with the update and had to perform recovery which is a time consuming process. They've stopped updating and are waiting for new software from BMW.

By losing a couple of cars I assume you meant the need to reflash it rather than writing the car off? |

F30's have 15 or so modules that need to be programmed (some other models up to 20 modules) and BMW uses the Bosch developed serial CAN BUS. Bus speed is very slow, like 1989 slow. But its reliable and does the job so its still in use by many OEM's. I think CAN BUS is the standard for OBDII. As far as regression testing, one would think they'd have this updating process down to a science. Apparently, they don't. I'm told that this has happened before and not just once before.

Is anyone able to supply the part number for the new steering rack?
I've just been informed that they've got the wrong part and hence wasn't able to reprogram it... They are now getting a new part from Sydney - I've got my fingers crossed that its the right part! |

what is all the reprogramming about? they told me mine was all reprogrammed successfully also...
CrazyLatte - Not sure of part number, but I know of another guy, BLT on here, who had his steering replaced at Westside QLD. Not sure if it is any help ,but the RTM in queensland also looks after western australia, so they should be on the same page....... you would think

So they installed the new steering rack in and found out that it was making crackling sound when the steering unwinds... they need to order the part again from Germany!
6 months since picking up the car and I'm still dealing with warranty issues... I've had it with BMW |

More steering rack/column drama.
Something interesting, well come to think of it probably more shocking happened to my F30 last week.. So the steering saga continues.
In early April 2013 I finally had my new steering rack and steering column installed as a part of the fix authorised out of Germany. Having done over 2,000 kms since the new parts were installed. The problem appeared to be fixed.. I received an email from Auto Classic last Monday advising me that they had more work to complete on my vehicle. I assumed it was for my new build plate and a new reverse camera.. As I live 600 kms from my dealership I told them it would have to wait until my first service in another 5,000 kms and that I was planning on driving to Esperance on the coast that coming weekend (330 each way) My reply email was met with a phone call from the service manager… advising me not to drive my vehicle at all as there is a problem with the new steering column and they would be sending a car carrier asap to drop off a car for me and pick up my car. As that sounded serious, I asked why I was told the following; Apparently the new steering column BMW advised them to use was the same one used in another BMW that also fits the F30.. Where the problem lies is….. the replacement steering column that they put into my car has the mechanical steering lock mechanism built into the column. The F30 on the other hand doesn't have a mechanical steering lock and is electronic. Therefore at high speed and over seriously bumpy damaged roads (like most roads in WA) there is a slight risk that the knocking could in fact cause the mechanical steering mechanism to engage on my car while driving, rending the steering wheel locked and immovable., which at 110km/h would equal disaster for me and my car. Interestingly enough though, I was told the risk was ever so slight, however I was not allowed to drive it. Go figure.. I was told that BMW said they could fix it by re-strapping it.. however they had decided in my particular case they want to replace the whole column again with a new one sent from Germany. The last one came from Germany as well… apparently… To be honest I don't know what to expect or believe …. I guess I will be hitting them up for written confirmation that it was replaced… the last thing I want to be is paranoid on long trips at high speed. I am not sure if the column they used initially was the one instructed to be used by BMW (they said it was) or Auto Classic took it upon themselves… so I can't say whether this is related to just my problem or if they have used the same column in all replacements prior to April 2013. Either way, I am a bit pissed about the whole situation. Interested to know if anyone else has been contacted by their dealership about this, if not, I would probably ask the question just to be safe. I apologise for any grammatical errors and long winded post, battling a flu at the moment, so pinging around on medication haha.

Gees....that really sounds like a saga and a half. I am yet to have any problems with my steering at all, I hope it does not occur! So how long will you be without your car for?

At this stage the fix is only a couple of days... but I also wanted my front windscreen replaced under insurance due to stone chips and sand blast but like my ContiSport5 RFT, there are no windscreens in Australia and it is coming via Germany.. 22nd at this stage, so it should be home a few days after that I would hope.

Not sure if this is related... but my first rack and column was the wrong part... and the 2nd set was defective... I'm on the 3rd set now... seems to work. Having said that I've only got the car back from BMW yesterday...

I'm aware of the issue actually. It delayed my replacements also.
As I understand it, the lock is simply screwed in, and can be removed from the steering column before it is installed. Perhaps this wasn't the case with yours. Quote:
