Dash rattle driving me crazy

Had enough now of my dashboard rattle. It needs to be stopped.

Its coming from behind the steering wheel close to the windscreen. Starts once you get to about 20mph and does not stop. Very consistent rattle.

Tried pushing the dash in various places and bashing it! Does not change it one bit.

Anyone had something similar and solved it?

Do you have HK? I’ve found the centre speaker grille can develop an annoying rattle much like you describe. I’ve also had occasional rattles around the steering wheel that can be solved by moving the wheel adjustment about.

Check the bolts on the cross members that are near the bulkhead in the engine bay are tight.

Yes I have HK. Thanks. Will try both of those out tomorrow. Where exactly is the centre speaker located?

Middle of the dash where it meets the windscreen - like a mesh sort of covering

Does it get better or worse with warmer ambient temps?

I know you say it's close to the windscreen, but rattles can sound like they are coming from somewhere else. Just in case you haven't already, try pressing down on the hard plastic cover just behind the steering wheel, which covers the top of the steering column. That has caused a few rattles in mine.

The amount of rattle's and creaks from the interior is a joke on these newer BMW's.
You can get rid of some rattles and creaks by wrapping some of the wires and connectors using cloth tape or foam if you can locate the source.
But then you will find the rattle and creaks from other parts of the interior.

I am having the same problem, centre dash rattle, seems to be from the centre speaker on the dash, it's more prevalent at warmer ambient temperatures. I too have HK sound system.
I've had worse rattles in cars, but then again I did expect a little better from a BMW.

Out of interest, do you have HUD?

I had a rattle in the same area on my 640, and it was noticeably worse when the weather was cooler (10-12 degrees). Once above 18 degrees, was a lot less noticeable.

Turns out mine was 2 plastic clips were broken that hold the dash in place, so it was flexing slightly in the middle and rubbing on the plastic bits and bobs beneath it, causing the rattle/creak. When warmer, the plastics obviously expanded a little, so increasing the friction between the surfaces and creaking less.

I'm not sure this will help with a rattling centre speaker but in my old Volvo I used silicon based dashboard shine, you know the really cheap stuff. Spray a copious amount into the lid of the can and when you have a good bit of liquid in there start to trickle it into the joints on the dash panels.
You may have to do it a few times to build up enough and your dash is going to need a proper cleaning with whatever you prefer to use, but with a bit of luck you should now have a good coating of lubricant on all the rattley and squeeky parts and the dash will shut the hell up.
I used to have a really annoying rattle in the Volvo and this did stop that and for the last five years there's been nothing. Never did cure the one in the interior mirror housing though - I very nearly used expanding spray foam on the b*****d after a long drive one day

I had a rattle that was from the (in my case, brushed aluminum) trim panel under the iDrive display. I found pulling it out a little bit seated it better and it stopped rattling.

I've had this for 2 years, only
Happened between about 10-20 degrees C constantly over 20mph too - tried to have it in under warranty and no fix - then I found it myself

Mine was actually something loose in the housing around he rear view mirror base - which sounded like I was coming from dash

Truth is it can be so many things so not likely the same but thought I'd share my experience

I got my dealer to take a look at it and they pretty much solved it for a while. Not sure quite what they did, but it has since returned. I now use a rolled up piece of black felt wedged in the gap between this panel and the dashboard above. This does a reasonable job but it only works if you don’t raise or lower your steering wheel.

Download a tone generator on your phone, pair it with the car, cycle through tones until you find the noise and the locate it and fix it.

My door rattles. Service adviser claims he can't hear it so no fix. Build quality is shoddy, it's genuinely putting me off another BMW

Just solved my rattle.

I traced the noise to the very front of the dash. Was not the HK speaker.

I decided to check if there was anything that had gone down the gap with a spatula, bent to the correct angle....

3 parking receipts were down there. They were 2 years old and had turned quite hard.

No rattle now.

One or more of them must have been fluttering in the draft.
